Title: How to check if a Famicom works and if it can work with a PAL TV?
Post by: Henrai on March 12, 2025, 05:30:35 am
Hi all, just got myself a Famicom system (HVC-001) but I am having trouble with setting it up and can do with some help!   :-[

First, is there a way to confirm the Famicom is successfully powered on without plugging into a TV? I believe the console is in working condition because the eBay seller outright said in the title and description how it was in working condition and included a photo of the console being played, had a 100% positive review and sold various Japanese hardware. The Famicom came with just the console and an aftermarket UK plug but I just want to make sure it is all good!

Second, is there a way to tell what TV's are compatiable with a Famicom and which ones are not? The TV I want to use is a Hitachi L42VK04U and I am able to play my PAL NES via RF (simply don't have any AV cables!) The NES comes up under Channel 36, but when I try to scan the Famicom, nothing comes up.

This is all assuming the Famicom is working with the aftermarket UK plug, the console is powered on, set to Game and CH1, and has a Famicom game inserted.

The TV also has a manual search where you can input the Band, TV System, Channel and Frequency, but I'm not sure what needs to be inputted. I also have an older CRT Bush (BTV18SIL/VA) and I haven't tested the Famicom with that yet, so hopefully it can work with that if it doesn't work with the more modern Hitachi TV.

If anybody here has any advice on what to do, that would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!  :D

Try setting the frequency to 91.5Mhz and flipping between the two channels on the back of the famicom.

Also, make sure that the GAME/TV switch is set to GAME.

Even if you get a Picture, it will be B&W & Rolling, It's NTSC-J

Make sure the UK Plug is 9V 1Amp
