Title: Twin Fami Burning Smell
Post by: landmasta on March 27, 2025, 01:53:50 am
Hey all, I just recently bought a Twin Famicom. I had to buy an ac adapter and AV cables cause it didnt come with it so I made sure to get an AC adapter that met the specifications (center pin positive, DC7.5V and 1.5A out) but I accidentally got one with a pin that was too small. I bought an adapter to convert 5mm 2.1mm to 5mm 2.5 and plugged it in. Immediately when I plugged it in I got a burning smell and when I tried to turn it on I was just getting buzzing noises intermittently. I've unplugged it cause I don't want to cause further damage but does anyone know what this could be and if it can be fixed?

How does the adapter look like? It might have switched the polarity so that it became center negative.
If you are lucky it just burned some plastic because the voltage regulator becoming hot.
If you are unlucky the voltage regulator and perhaps some other components was shot and needs to be replaced. If it got a fuse it might just be the fuse that needs to be replaced.

Once you figure out the problem with the adapter you can test and see if it works, if not maybe something was damaged.

Well, I went ahead and bought a purpose built adapter for the Twin Famicom from a reputable retro game website but unfortunately the problem persists. When I plugged it in, the burning smell returned and the same thing when I tried turning it on. I think I can rule out the adapter being the issue then.

I see, I guess there's a short somewhere.
