Title: How many carts of Famicom do you have and which?
Post by: FamicomRetroGamer on March 27, 2010, 07:29:00 pm
For the moment I just have 11, it's not much but nice since it's not games which are everywhere.

They are:
01. Tetris Flash
02. Kerokerokerropi
03. Donkey Kong Jr
04. Sanrio
05. Ultraman
06. Konami Sports
07. Yoshi's Cookie
08. Saint Seiya
09. Astro Boy
10. Pac Land
11. Dungeon Kid

All genuine, no pirate carts, phew. ;D

Surely some of you got 400 or more even.

I currently only have 55. I'd list them off like you wanted, but I can't read Japanese and I don't know the names of half of these games.

Same here. I've been focusing on other things lately like upgrading my PC.

I've got 6 original Famicom carts and about 25 pirate ones for a total of 30 cartridges (give or take).

I'm not going to list all of the pirates but I do own some great ones like:

...and some of the craziest ROM hacks out there!

As for the originals:

I also have 10 Famicom disks and 2 Mitsumi Quick Disks (FDS compatible with a simple modification).

I just added the list of my games, so enjoy.
Its not to impressive but its games I like, I have traded and sold away about 14 of the games.
Or broke cases while trying to open them... Some pirate cases literally shatter.

I once bought a pirate cart, and when it arrived in the mail I tried to put it in my famicom. Guess what? The light force I used to put it in the famicom broke the two shells of the cartridge apart. What junk!

Well I certainly have a Grade F cart then. The cart plastic is paper thin and comes apart at the slightest touch, the label is on crooked, the glob top is super cheap and the board is as small as the pirates could get it. It`s a 4 in 1, and the menu is suprisingly nice, however the first game (pocket monster) does not boot. The second and third games (pokemon red, ferrari challenge) have glitchy sprites, and the fourth and shittiest game, (harry potter) works just fine. Of course.  >:(

Thanks!  :)

You are correct, the carts are pretty cheap in Japan if you shop around.  Most of the carts in my collection cost me less than 300 yen each (about $3), some a lot less than that if you buy them in lots.

For notorious cheapskates like myself, Japan is a collector's paradise!

Amazing really!!! I want to go to japan!!! I have around 600 carts with almost 200 of them being duplicates. I see how tough it gets to buy lots because more than half of them are doubles. Awa!!!!

about 150 official games, only 8 or so pirates (most of which came in bulk buys, not really interested that much in pirates).
if its text heavy like an RPG then i buy the NES version instead (same goes for FDS exclusives).
almost no duplicates as i tend to sell them off on ebay - to fund more purchases!
most of the games i'm still looking for tend to be the more expensive ones - Gimmick/Hebereke/Castlevania 1&3/Wanpaku etc etc
there's going to be a long wait for most of them!

Well, I'm going to make an official reply to what games I own in a few days once my Rakuten order has come in... But a related question: where has everyone who has gotten their pirated disks and cartidges come by theirs? Is there some sort of store auction site that I don't know about that lets people trade in acknowledged pirates or is there an undercover keyword to search for on ebay or are you guys just really diligent in tracking down sellers on great forums like this?

I have 23 Famicom carts but it seems they are all pirated.
The ones I have are the following:

21 in 1
Adventure Island
Batman
Castlevania
Chip & Dales
Crossfire
Crossfire II
Dick Tracy
Duckhunt
Ducktales
Dragonball
Galaxian
Jackie Chan
Robocop
Rygar
Tennis
Terminator
Sky Destroyer
Super Mario Bros
Taito Basketball
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II
Wild Gunman

One cart is still unidentified but I think it is Ninja Gaiden III, although the cart is broken and won't load.

Pics of the carts are in this thread: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=5393.0 (http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=5393.0)

Actually we get them from members whom live in foreign places like China, Poland and Russia; those places are littered with pirates.

I have only a handfull of original FC games, but about 50 to 80 pirates. My first pirate was a multigame cartridge, and when I discovered eBay back in the days (4years ago), I went on shopping spree and bought originals of those multicartridge's games I loved,  such as Rockman, Challenger, SMB, Macross or Ninja hattori kun. I got obsessed with Rockman since, so I bought all of them (my second purchased rockman cart was pirated 6in1 rockman cart and that was number one of only two pirate carts bought of eBay). In my country there was always a couple of sellers (usually Polish or Ukrainean) on local flea markets with pirates from china. But today they are disapearing, and the quality of cartridges is lower than low, so I haven't bought one in a long time now...
Also in chinese shops with clothes you can sometimes find a couple of carts. Just behind the desk where the seller is standing. Sometimes it looks like buying black goods, illegal yellow carts...

I've got a good handful of carts. Not sure on the actual numbers, but I am guessing something around 60 or so. The ratio is about 50-50 in terms of pirate vs. originals. Some of the pirates aren't available as anything else, and some of my pirates were just cheaper to get that way. I'll make an actual list, and post it up for the sake of sharing nerdiness... because that is always fun.

As far as where my pirates came from... some I have purchased from members who live in the US, but have contacts outside the US. Others I have bought from members overseas, such as Poland, and even purchased some from guys in South America. Not all of them are easy to come by, but are WAY fun to collect. Variety is the spice of life... and there can be a lot of variety in the Famicom/Famicom pirate world.

Unfortunately no.  It is 636 unique carts and about 500 doubles, so I'm far short of the full set (1051 carts).

Jpx....
Those are pretty cool! I see a lot of Koei titles in there, so I am guessing a good handful of old school strategy games? While I think the cart design is neat, I wouldn't be able to play them very well... can't read/speak Japanese. Lol. There are games that I am still hunting down foreign language FAQs for. Ha ha ha!
Title: Re: How many carts of Famicom do you have and which?
Post by: jpx72 on March 07, 2011, 11:06:04 pm
You assume correctly, those KOEI titles are all strategies, but since my real interrest is more in the technology those games use (mapper 5 or "MMC5" is the largest Nintendo mapper, the most expensive one and also the most sofisticated of them all, has extra sound chanel and other stuff, and supports the largest -in filesize- games) gameplay is not as important to me. Shame is, as "Kevtris" from nesdev said about those KOEI titles - "their games seemed to totally waste the hardware resources".
Uchuu Keibitai SDF is really fun (but hard) and Just Breed has beautifull music (I also very much like the intro music in Nobunaga no Yabou: Sengoku Gunyuuden). Others, are ...well every one has it's ups and downs. The Metal Slader Glory is the largest official Famicom cartridge ever (512kb prg+512kb chr), and hopefully I will be getting an original soon (thanks Manuel)!

"The Metal Slader Glory is the largest official Famicom cartridge ever "

-Learn something new everyday. I recall that Dragon Warrior 4 really pushed the capacity of the casings, and the board the chips are on. To this day, it's still one heavy NES cart.  ;D

Any idea on how DW4 pushed the Famicom? I know Recca is known for having some of the most sprites on screen without flicker, and for pushing the speed of the hardware itself. Just something fun to mentally explore.

lol, I actually just submitted a review for boogerman 2, and there is already one for boogerman 1..  So you can read a detailed description of the difference soon when it gets published :)
Edit: They are by different companies (I think) so there is quite a bit of difference.

I have OVER 9000!!!!!! eewwww..... over 200 (or maybe 300+) pirate Famicom cartridges. I don't count them because I usually get some new games to my collection, so counting them is pretty impossible  .
Title: Re: How many carts of Famicom do you have and which?

If I counted right, I have 19 different carts ATM, and because a lot of them are multicarts I have about 140 different games.
Aladdin (Hummer Team)
Abadox (official)
The General's Son
Kart Fighter
Lupin the Third (pirate, although the game itself is completely unmodified. I also have this on a multicart)
Meikyuu Kumikyoku (Milon's Secret Castle) (official)
Street Fighter IV
Tom & Jerry (pirate)
The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (pirate)
A bunch of multicarts I can't be bothered to list.

Should be getting 5 more in the near future:
Raf World (official)
Super Fighter III (according to the label art)
Transformers: Convoy no Nazo (official)
1997 Super HiK 8-in-1
250-in-1

On hand as I write this, only Urusei Yatsura. :P

That's it. No boxes or manuals. Not even one FDS disk or a 72-60 pin adapter to run the NES games I've got.

Same here, except I have about 20 cartridges. I don't have any NES games or an adapter for them, mainly because (to my knowledge) some PAL NES games would run incorrectly on an NTSC console. That said, I do have a HK Famicom which has a PAL switch, but it does nothing as far as I can tell.

I started my Famicom collection when I got a Super 8 / Tri-star last year. Until the past several weeks, I had one cart only: a boxed Devil World (second version, I think - with the cooler label).

However, I've ramped up my collecting significantly (gotta take a break for now though). These are the carts I've received recently:

Gimmick!
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario USA
Super Mario Bros. 3
Donkey Kong
Kunio Kun No Jidaigeki da yo Zenin Shugo

And these are the ones I'm expecting in the next week or two:

Holy Diver
Getsu Fuu Ma Den
TMNT
TMNT 2
Goonies
Clu Clu Land
Hoshi no Kirby
Nuts and Milk
Fantasy Zone

And a few pirate multicarts. I think I might have left one or two out....but that's basically my Famicom collection right now.

My last rough count in January was around 140, and I've gotten a bunch of new titles in the mail since then, so I would say I'm hovering around the 200 mark now, about 20 of those pirate carts, another 10 or so are either boxed or complete. I have no design skills with editing software, but I'm planning to do a giant book or binder of info sheets on the entire library "#-Z" with either label or box art scans to help better identify everything! :)

I was fortunate enough to inherit a crate of games form the guy I got my systems from.  I have 43 Famicom non boot (plus 2 more (devil world and Ninja Jajamaru Kun on the way), 3 boots, and 25 Super Famicom Games.  I also have 8 Game Boy games.

I am probably going to sell off most of what I inherited so I can buy other games that I desire more.

Here is my CIB famicom cart collection. Also got a bunch of loose carts.

In my CIB pile, got all the notable games. Stuff like Recca, Gold Punchout, Guevara, Gimmick, BioMiracle, MetalFighter, Doropie, Banana Prince, Battle Formula, All the Contras/Castlevanias/Rockman, Hebereke, Special Hard Case Namcot (Pacman, Galaga, Galaxian, Dig Dug, Mappy), etc etc ... it's all in there. No gold carts like Hot Scramble, etc though (other than Punchout).

Man. That is seriously impressive.

At last count, I have 90 carts and 12 FDS games. Two of the FDS games are on Hacker disks, but I hesitate to call them pirates because there's the possibility they could have been made with the Nintendo Disk Writer way back when. I'm really not sure about that though.

I've got a few more on the way and I'll be dumping a few of the games I currently have, so this list will be changing yet again in the near future. I'll have to snap a picture of them when the dust settles and replace this huge list with it.

I have probably around 300 different games, and I am always expanding the collection.  Every month, I seem to add about 20 or 30 more carts, mostly thanks to the great collectors here.

Although I have very few official Japanese carts, the vast majority of my stuff is unlicensed original games (not pirates), and excluding a few genres, I probably have the vast majority of those.

Unfortunately, I don't feel comfortable listing what I have and don't have here.  Somewhere there is a picture on Nintendo Age of part of my collection, but it doesn't really show much.  If I post that I want to buy something though, usually that means that I don't own it.  ;)

Dang now I want to update my loose games list :D

I have probably around 450 licensed games, another 3 - 400 unlicensed games, and then some bootleg crap as well...I am well past 1000 Famicom carts by now, excluding the stuff for sale / trade.  There are definitely times when I question my sanity and how I actually ended up where I am at, and those are the times that I go through and start trimming off the fat.

Although I hope it never comes down to this, I have made a promise to myself though that if I ever need the money for something "real" in life, that I will sell the collection.  Although I don't like to  think about this, I never want to loose my priorities in life, and if the choice were between the Famicom collection and marrying my future wife or supporting my future children, of course the decision is easy to make ;)

My problem with the whole "sell the collection for money" argument is that the majority of retro games aren't worth very much at all.  If it came down to me needing money, I would just sell my rares, since that would probably net me about 80+% of my collection's value.

Yes, I agree with that; however, the one thing I hate is what I can a "broken" collection, i.e. a collection that I worked very hard to put together, and then broke apart again, by cherry picking and removing most of the "good" stuff.  And with Famicom (unlike the NES), a lot of the "rares" (actually the better term would be valuables) are actually fun games, so selling off that 20% would be like cutting your arm off of your body, imo.  So if I start to sell important parts of my collection, then at that point where is the point of collecting the rest, if the jewels are missing?  So if that situation ever happened, most of the stuff would go, sadly.

@ Joe and Dave

It would depend on how badly you needed the money. I've got hundreds of games worth $5 or less, but if I sold them all that's still several hundred dollars. (And I know many of us have similar-sized collections.)

Heck, at some point ALL of my collection, (games, hardware, merchandise) has to go and I'll be left with a couple of emulation stations I expect.

Yes, I remember awhile back when you had messaged me about the Taiwanese Famicom, that at some point you were going to sell all of your stuff at some point.  If you don't mind me asking, why are you going to get rid of it all at some point?  I am sure most of us here will get rid of our collections sometime in life, but I guess you see this in the foreseeable future?

To be honest - I always knew eventually but I hadn't put a time frame on it.  I think it will be in the next 5 years though, I want to buy a house and need the money.

It was always an investment, because I pour so much into it but I will struggle to let it all go.  Like someone else said though, when it comes to choosing between games and family it's hardly a choice, it's an impulse.

That just sucks though.  Are you guys buying things at good deals or just buying what you see regardless?  I have a pretty substantial collection myself, but no where near the size of some here.

It would kill me to ever sell it off as that's who I am, but my promise to myself is more that if I ever got to the point where basic necessities aren't met, then I would sell things off.  Like if I lost my job, had no more money left, needed to eat, as a last resort.

I'm sorry, but if you're getting to point where collecting is costing you so much money that it's preventing you from doing things that you want to do and you have to start making decisions then it's time to start cutting back on collecting or finding a higher paying job.   What'll happen is that you'll buy your house and you'll get married with the extra money, but then you'll struggle more finding and collecting what you sold and end up regretting it.

I agree with Raver. I try to keep my collecting habits in a financially-sustainable place. I bought a house almost two years ago, and I didn't sacrifice one piece of my collection to pay for it. (And I don't make a ton of money.)

While the money I've blown on games over the years has kept my savings account thinner-than-is-ideal, I've always justified it by knowing that I buy stuff at good prices. I'm pretty confident I could resell just about anything in my collection for at least what I paid for it, should a crisis come up. But that's really the only thing that I foresee coming between me and my collection.

Damn that's gotta be tough L_E_T. Hopefully you don't have to let go of your most cherished pieces.

The house I'm living at now I bought about 10 yrs ago (horrible timing!), but luckily I didn't have to part with anything. Though leading up to it I curbed back on picking up pricey stuff like NeoGeo doodads.

Good luck L_E_T, home ownership is a great feeling  :)

OUYA makes a nice emulation machine for most consoles 1998 or prior. :)
I figure one day I'll have to let my gaming stuff go too, but that's life sometimes.

If I had to go minimalistic via emulation (and not flashcarts on a real system)... I'd do this:

1. Get a low-res RGB monitor. For people in Europe, no biggie. CRT with RGB SCART
2. Get a decent PC... Core2Duo 3Ghz good enough
3. Get an ArcadeVGA video card (some older ATI cards can be tweaked)
4. Get a VGA to breakout BNC or SCART (whatever your RGB CRT needs)
5. Do some configuring... tweak the emulators to output the system's true native resolutions
6. Controller adapters to USB

Enjoy... juicy RGB with delicious scanlines with real controllers. I actually have this setup now also. It's fantastic. I already had all the components just laying around, just needed the ArcadeVGA card.

It's basically like building a MAME arcade cab using real CRT display and controls, but adapted for a console setup.

Don't get me wrong I don't really want to sell any of it, I've traded or sold a few loose bits but in relative terms I don't sell anything, I'm one of those hoarders that tend to amass things.

However I do recognise that its unrealistic to expect to hang on to all of this for life - isn't it?  You can't take any of it with you after all.

I do find that what I let go I end up looking for again - but to me that's not a reason to never let anything go.

I am lookingto build something like this.
1.Do you have any recommendations for CRT with grat picture(or maybe even RGB scart) ? I am from Europe and it seems like buy PVM is near to impossible here.
4. Any recommendations for VGA to SCART convertor, will that cheap 15 dollar one on ebay do ? ?

You can do this all pretty much with a Gen 1 Wii via component - which then has the advantage of playing Gamecube and Virtual Console (i.e. N64 etc.) games.  I use the SFC controller with it.

Only downside for me is that MAME on Wii only handles up to CPS1, but playing Capcom's Dungeons and Dragons on it was divine.

Your scenario does sound better though - could you please (pretty please!) take a snap and show us what it's like? :)

@casino

I hear from gamers in Europe that the Bang Olufsen B&O MX4/6/7000 CRTs are great. Lot of talk about them in other forums. Though I don't live in Europe so can't comment too much beyond that.

Once again, not in Europe so not too familiar with SCART... but here's a thread discussing it:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=43208

@L_E_T

I actually picked up another cheap Wii and soft modded it with the intent to do this. To my disappointment, not all emulators on the Wii will output the native resolution. That's when I scrapped that idea and went PC...

Note that before that I was trying it with an OUYA and even iPhone/iPad. I got a bunch of cables and an Extron Emotia (plus similar converters) to downscale to the RGB CRT. In the end, cut the BS and just use a PC.

Here's the current setup I've been working on and off with for the past several months. Note cellphone cam pics don't do the screen justice. Using my test rig Sony PVM 20" monitor.

Since the VGA to BNC cable I was using outputs red, green, blue, horizontal sync and vertical sync... I had to get a BNC T-connector ($1) to combine horizontal and vertical sync for the Sony PVM.

I didn't want to fuss with too many tweaks and what not, so I just went ahead and bought an ArcadeVGA card. Makes things more plug and play hardware-wise.

I feel that I have a similar mentality as you, when it comes to selling off parts of the collection.  Although I am always posting things on here and other forums for sale, these are mostly just extras, things I have come across and purchased, hoping to resell at some point to other collectors, or even better to trade to help me obtain other games that I am looking for.  And with these sales, typically the actual profit I am making is quite small, usually $5 - $10 max per item, after taking paypal fees, initial item costs, etc into account.  But I enjoy hunting for games, and I also enjoy helping other collectors get items they are looking for, for reasonable prices - and I really appreciate when sellers on FW do the same in return, as so many have :)

Otherwise, I rarely sell things that are an actual part of my collection (i.e. purchased solely for my collection, not purchased with the intention of reselling).  I hate breaking up sets (maybe some mild case of OCD), and thus once it goes into the collection, it stays there unless I find a second copy in better condition.

To your other point, I totally agree and don't think that it is reasonable / realistic to keep these games until I die.  I figure one of a few scenarios will play out.  I will either lose interest at some point, and then sell the games.  If I don't have children, I think this situation would be more likely to occur.  I mean, I honestly can't see myself getting to age 60, getting arthritis, and then enjoying owning a massive game collection; however, if I had children, I could enjoy the collection through them.

#2:  Some situation happens in life where I need a nice sum of money, and the easiest / fastest way is to sell the collection.  Family emergency.  Purchasing a dream house with a dream wife.  Etc.  If the situation was not so important (i.e. something that I could easily do if I planned and saved appropriately for a few paychecks, like a small vacation to a different country) then I would feel it a waste to sell.  But as we all know, you need to have your life priorities first.

#3:  I keep the games until I grow old, but I don't enjoy them in the same way as I do now.  To me, this would be the ideal way of what I would like to do with my collection.  After settling down and also completing my collection, I would like to buy an everdrive for personal use and then open up a game museum dedicated primarily to Famicom, but maybe also to some other gaming machines that I collect.  To me, it would be a great way to archive / preserve my collection, while also subjecting it to something better than sitting packed away in a closet, due to me being "beyond" the Famicom / gaming stage (as we all know, our interests change throughout our life, but it doesn't mean that we won't still have fond memories of our previous interests).  To me, this would be my dream, but who knows if I will ever be able to make it to that stage or not.

@Stealthluker - Yeah that looks great!   Now to find a PVM...

@FCgamer - I think you've knocked the nail on the head.  I will likely have to sell mine in the next 5 years out of necessity, but of course I'd like to keep it all a lot longer and also hoped of opening a museum one day.

There are RGB SCART cables for the Wii, but I believe you have to do some tricks to get it to work on a North American Wii (No problems for other regions). That's what I was intending to do. Had the RGB cables and did the tweaks on my Wii, but the non native res thing bugged me.

It's preference I suppose. It bugs me... but then again there are people who are fine with composite or s-video. If I was fine with that, I could have just used my modded xbox... also tons of other emulation devices. But you really can't beat the flexibility of a PC. Not to mention the more up-to-date, feature rich emulators and other software.

That's the purpose of the ArcadeVGA card, it only outputs a 15khz signal the entire time to keep your monitor safe.

Ok, i just spend the whole day reading about scanlines, pvms, crt, and shit.
The cheapest and easiest soultion seems some hi-end consumer grade Sony Trinitron with component input and Wii with component cable.

I used to be strongly against emulation - it was always about the real thing with real controllers on original hardware. But damn, that PVM setup with crisp scanlines sure looks good.

I've also made a pretty big change this year, I move houses (and countries) regularly for work so by necessity can't have a big collection anymore. It's kind of liberating as the past few years I'd been quite into quantity collecting - always envisioning that bookshelf simply covered in games and accessories. Now I can take my time and pick the pieces I really want to play and enjoy.

I've also had to get over regret, which is powerful as a game collector. It's so easy to regret selling pieces or regret not buying something one time at that special price. But at the end of the day, you're no more happier with or without it and something else just as cool will come along. It's kind of the thrill of the hunt that is just as exciting.

Ramblings aside, I probably have around 250 FC carts and 100 FDS disks at home in Canada that will stay a part of the collection for a while to come.

As of today, 173 unique carts.  Debating if I want to just bite the bullet, go down to Book-Off and just scoop up all the baseball/pachinko/mah-jong, and fishing carts to get me up to an even 200 (and just get them out of the way).

Thanks for all the input, guys.  It's great to get advice from other fans.  I've thought about going the auction route.  I prefer to buy from actual stores, though.  It shows that there's still some interest in Famicom titles.

I am going for a full set, so I know I'm going to have to pick these titles up eventually.  Better to do it now at 108 yen each than later at two or three hundred (or more).  Especially when going up to the register with 10-20 carts will *absolutely* get the store employees talking about "Hey, we sold a ton of carts today, let's put more out".

It's not the disposable sports titles that I'm worried about, long term.  Because I know I'll be able to write an article or two comparing different baseball games, or talking about games that work with the pachinko controller.  They'll wind up being well-worth the 108 yen each.  It's the absolutely *rubbish* titles that I dread collecting.  Titles like a Week with Garfield or (almost) any visual novel-like carts.

Ah well, the light and end of the tunnel is Gimmick, and that game is freaking *fantastic*!

They were just never my cup o' tea.

The mahjong games are an interesting subset.  *Most* of them are dirt cheap.  I think I got my gray boxed mahjong for like 8 yen at Book-Eco in Shingu.  Even the ones that come with a controller/gimmick can often be picked up for only a few hundred yen.  But then you've got those *other* mahjong games that I'd be embarrassed to OWN, let alone be seen buying...and those ones aren't cheap.

I should really catalogue my famicom games.

I recently arranged the 600-700 loose carts by English alphabetical, such as A games, B games, C games, etc.
Next step is to start entering them into my collection database.  Finding a famicom cart code database might be the best way to do it.

I have an excel list of the games, and everytime I get a new game I mark it off on the list.  I also printed out the list and keep it in a binder, but it gets updated less frequently.

At the moment, I organize my games by those I want to try out and play in the near future, and those which are crap, to get stuffed away in the drawer.  In a few years, when I move and get a new place, I hope to get some better shelves and to organize the games in alphabetical order.

Lol, I wonder how many people who own Mahjong carts actually know how to play it.  I'm pretty sure I have 1 or 2 myself.  I need to learn the game sometime.

I want to learn Mahjong as well, but I am more interested in Chinese Chess.  I once watched my girlfriend's father and my girlfriend play Chinese Chess, and it is so similar to western chess, it quickly made me become interested (I really like western chess, so nothing liking adding a new spin on it).    So that is my first priority.

Second I want to learn mahjong though, but since you need four players, it is much harder for me to find people to play with and learn.

36 official among nearly 1100 total.  ;D Tending to replace multicarts with single older pirates.

The filter options are fully customizable via XML-file, so I could share this engine with anyone that need it

Very nice collection!  I will definitely be taking a closer look at this when I get home from work.

Also, you know, I have a lot of older single pirate carts, maybe I have some you need?

They say it's a ladies' game - not sure how true that is, maybe it's like bridge, seen as an older person's past time.

In America I heard mahjong mostly popular among ladies (especially Jewish ladies) but I don't think that's true in Asia? In Japan it's kind of connected to yakuza since it's perfect for gambling.

Chinese, Japanese and American rules are all very different (especially American as the types of hands you can get points for change every year! And you use very different equipment, like racks and chips) If you want to play video game mahjong, look for Japanese mahjong rules (also called riichi mahjong). The hardest part is probably that you have to memorize quite a large number of hands/conditions called yaku.

It's not really like bridge, more like poker (in the sense that you collect hands like straights, three-of-a-kind and similar) but much more varied than poker.

I found the write-ups at Mahjong on MAME (http://mahjonginmame.com/howto.htm) to be very helpful when starting out.  Explains not only the basic rules of Riichi Mahjong (which is what most Mahjong video games are), but also a lot of the more obscure rules that seem completely random if you're not aware of them.  Start with the "How to Play" page (linked above) and work your way down the list of pages on the left side ("Special Rules", especially).

I will note that nearly 100% of the Mahjong arcade games emulated by MAME are AV in nature.  Which is great if you're into that sort of thing.  However, they're not great for learning since they force you to make decisions in just a few seconds (which makes sense as it's an arcade game).  The numerous Famicom Mahjong games are a lot easier to learn from since you can take all the time you want.

Are the two Ide Yosuke Jissen Mahjong titles easy to learn from or even the slightest bit accessible to non-jp speakers? That special controller is kinda sexy.

Those controllers are awesome.  Been a while since I've played those two, but I don't remember it being any more confusing/difficult than other Mahjong games.  I believe it actually has modes for teaching Mahjong strategies, but that's not really helpful unless you can read Japanese :-[

Most (if not all) of the FC Mahjong games are playable if you know the rules.  There are Japanese words/phrases common to all of them (ron, tsumo, etc), but those are all words you'd encounter on any good riichi mahjong tutorial.  What you end up missing out on is the extra "spice" features added to games -- like if the opponents talk to you, or if there's an RPG mode or something.

I'm at nearly 100 CIB games... there's roughly 30-40 more to get before my collection will be complete! Lot of pricey ones left on my list, though.

I recently sold off a ton of Famicom games. I've tried to keep only the best for myself, or at least good ones. Others that I got rid of I upgraded to PCE versions.

These are mostly Famicom exclusives, but not all. There's no real rhyme or reason for the ones that aren't FC-exclusive, except for Rockman 4 and 5 which I got because they were cheaper than the NES versions.

Air Fortress
Argus
Dig Dug II
Final Fantasy III (with translated ROM)
Galaxian
Goonies
Goonies 2
Gun*Nac
Higemaru Makaijima
Kage no Densetsu
King's Knight
Mappy
Mario Bros
Meikyuu Kumikyoku
Mike Tyson's Punch-out!!
Nuts & Milk
Rockman 4
Rockman 5
Salamander
Son Son
Super Mario Bros 3
Thexder
Twinbee
Yossy no Cookie
Youkai Kurabu

I also own Ganbare Goemon! Karakuri Douchuu, but I've yet to really play it, so I can't say if I'm keeping it or not.

Do you resell everything but your favorites, or something? Technically the highest number I've had was... a bit over 200. This was back when I collected cart only games, and pirates. Then I switched to official-only, sold off the pirates, and my number was down to a little over 100... then I switched to CIB only, sold off the loose carts, and now I'm just finally breaking the 100 CIB mark. I should have around 130-140 by the time my collection is finished.

Yeah, I sold off most of them and kept the rarer stuff. I also have about 10 FDS games. All the games I sold are common and I'll get them back eventually.
