I took another stab at Ninja Crusaders (NES) today. I powered through most of the game with the katana, but I wasn't able to clear some of the more chaotic bits of the last stage so I used the dragon transformation to power through it and get to the final boss. The first form is pretty easy, but I can't take care of that second form yet. I continued and played through the last stage with shuriken, and that was a bit easier, but the whip just doesn't do enough damage to bosses. I game-overred yet again.

Frustrated and demoralized, I switched over to Super Mario Bros 3. I walked into the first goomba in the game and died. It was that kind of hour for me. I shaped up and powered through the first three worlds, before I got a little tired of the game and used warp whistles to jump to World 8. I was sloppy, and it frustrated me further, but I did beat Bowser and won the game yet again.

I tested a bunch of SNES games I've bought over the last couple of weeks yesterday. That included the very fun Gradius III, which was a spare I came across in a collection I bought. I also played Mario's Time Machine for the first time, and that surfing bit is very confusing considering it's not even in the NES version I've played a few times before. I couldn't even figure it out; I filled up my mushroom collecting bar a few times, but nothing happened.

But I mainly went through a bunch of sports games that I've gathered for repro donors; sadly those Maddens and Griffeys didn't already have saved games on them, so I wound up having to screw with them long enough to save something to them. (And I'll have to do it again today to see if the saved games are still there.)

I saved Bonkers for last, and I'm glad I did. I'd never played it before, but I had some fun with it. Another successful collaboration between Capcom and Disney. I wasn't entirely comfortable with the dash mechanics quite yet, but it has the makings of a very enjoyable game. Anyone else here like Bonkers?

After that, I also had another shot at Ninja Crusaders (NES). I blitzed to the last level pretty easily, struggled a bit there, and ultimately died on the final boss several times. I'll keep working on it.

I tested a few more relatively new arrivals on the SNES front. Retested some sports junk/donors to see if the save batteries were still working. Played a couple levels of Super Mario World. Played some Super Punch-Out for the first time in almost a year. (I still suck at Dragon Chan.) Finished up with a little Tecmo Super Bowl. I'm definitely starting to feel the excitement of football season approaching, even if I'm strictly a college football guy.

The Wonderful 101 demo.  It's really fun once you figure out what's going on!

I spent most of my game time today testing out SNES games; not the most fun thing in the world, given how many of them were junk sports games. But my last game of the evening was Tetris Blast for the Game Boy. It was my first time playing it, and it was fun. I really got into for a half-hour or so.

I had my first taste of two good puzzle games today: Mole Mania (GB) and Tetris Attack (SNES). Tetris Attack really has nothing to do with Tetris, but was still very addictive.

Earlier, I tried my hand at Fire Hawk and the Terminator on the NES. Both are games that need to be beaten for the NintendoAge challenge, and both are games I have some familiarity with. I'll have to keep practicing, as I didn't do too well at either.

Then I busted out some Tecmo Super Bowl and played four more games into season mode as the Packers. After smashing the Bucs, I tied the Dolphins. I don't think I'd ever tied a game in Tecmo before. I then blew out the Rams and beat the Cowboys by two touchdowns. These Packers have almost no ground game, but Sterling Sharpe is an elite receiver, and I do a lot of damage throwing down the field at him.

I couldn't help but notice that Hosuke Sharaku himself actually appears in that game... one of these days I've got to play it. I think I might try it out on emulator before I buy it.

Last non-Famicom game I played: Super Street Fighter IV. Just some ranked matches with T. Hawk...
So ends another chapter in the glorious legend of the Ninja... Until next time...

Played The Terminator a couple of times today, and reached stage 5. I'm going to keep working on this one until it's beaten. When I'd had enough of that crap for the day, I played a couple of games of Tecmo Super Bowl.

I wound up losing my first game of the season, in a rematch with the Bucs (and I beat them  58-7 in the first game!). So much for relaxation and confidence building! I swear, there's some kind of luck mechanism in that game, because some days you get all the breaks and others... the breaks get you.

I did bounce back with a blowout over the Jets and a close win over the Buffalo Bills. I'm pretty terrible at run defense in the game, but I held Thurman Thomas to 18 yards for the game. He's so overpowered that Tecmo tournaments usually ban players from playing as the Bills, just as the Raiders are off-limits because of Bo Jackson.

Well, I finished my season with Green Bay in Tecmo Super Bowl tonight. After a 12-3-1 regular season, I barely beat Washington in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, before getting smashed by San Francisco in the Divisional Round. After a bit of online research, it seems Green Bay is one of the weakest teams in the game, which makes sense given I have only one good offensive player and not a lot of help on defense, either. I'll retool my offensive playbook and play another season with Green Bay to see if I can do any better.
