Lolo 1 is very easy compared to almost all other Lolo games. The Famicom exclusive Eggerland games are harder and even the Japanese versions of Lolo 2 and Lolo 3 are said to be a little harder than their English versions.

I was inspired by you and started playing Dragon Quest. I'm at level 8, have reached Maira (the third town) and have just bought me a fine iron axe. I'm about to enter the Marsh cave but I'm not sure if I'm ready yet for that.

I'm playing the Famicom version, meaning crude graphics (for example all characters always face out of the TV no matter what direction they are walking in, due to the game being partly inspired by the Ultima series) and no cart backup but passwords. On the upside that means I don't have to worry about loosing my save because of old batteries etc. I can have as many "save files" as I have paper to write the passwords on.

Although it's a very simple RPG, it's really a timeless classic. Especially for being the first game in the genre known as Japanese-style RPGs. There're lots of cool details, for example the sprite actually reflects what you have equipped and Sugiyama is playing with the pitch in the music in a very aesthetic way. And although the graphics are simple they are very colourful and doesn't really look bad at all.

More Dragon Warrior II. I picked up the Thunder Sword and Armor of Erdrick tonight. My party is now in the low-30s levelwise. I did some level grinding today, and that will have to continue next time because I'm not yet strong enough to go to Hargon's Castle (although I did see it for the first time today).

That's interesting about the first Dragon Quest... I didn't realize that the battery was an improvement for the US version. But I'd agree that the first game is a timeless classic. Though it's very simple and relatively small for its genre, it still has qualities that make it outshine some of the more sophisticated examples on the NES.

Yup, sprites that could face in all 4 directions didn't come until DQ II and backup saving came first in DQ III. When Dragon Warrior was to be released in North America, DQ III was already out in Japan so they could add these new features into DW.

Oh I also wants Armor of Erdrick... er I mean Roto.
I shot the moon and marched into the marsh cave at level 8. I didn't dare touching the dragon there yet so I went through the tunnel and arrived at the island on the other side. And the monsters... darn they are strong! I managed to rush to the town Rimuldar with just a few HP left and no MP. One more encounter and I would be dead for sure! I bought some magic keys and started my training by fighting the werewolves and other strong monster just outside town. The only way to survive is taking my chances with Laliho (the sleep spell) but it's very risky and I can often just beat a few enemies before I need to stay at the inn. I saw death in the white of the eyes many times already (does that expression exist in English?).

I'm now level 9 but they say there are even stronger enemies to the south and I still don't wanna fight that dragon so I'll just stay here and build up experience and gold for a while, saving up for an iron shield.

I've continued to hammer away at Dragon Warrior II. At 40 hours in, I've passed through the Rhone Cave and picked up most of the treasures to be had in it. I just need to go back for one more grinding session to pick up a second Mysterious Hat for my princess, and I'll have every good piece of equipment for the end of the game. Two of my three characters are halfway to maxing out their Experience, too.

P,

I can understand. That dragon guarding the princess is pretty tough. And I rather like level-grinding on monsters I can barely survive against. It seems to happen a little bit faster that way.

Hehe I'm going to start DQ2 too, when I finished DQ1.

Allright my training has beard fruit at last. The tables has turned and all the enemies here are at my mercy know. At level 13 I finally challenged the dragon. It was a tough battle and hoimi (healing spell) was useless against his fierce attacks so I used only herbs to heal. I was almost out of healing herbs and I knew that I couldn't stand another counter attack from the dragon, but I also thought he was at his limit too so I took a chance and lunged at him. :pow: and he fell down dead to the cold cave floor! After all this, carrying a princess to a castle a few miles is super easy.

The lost vikings 2. Im at the level GYSR.

I took another crack at Kiwi Kraze this afternoon. I've been playing it off and on for the last several weeks, and I'm getting the early stages pretty well sorted out. I beat the third boss for the first time this afternoon, but the game gets really hard immediately in the fourth set of stages. No checkpoints?!

EarthboundCentral posted from patches for Earthbound Zero/Mother 1  a couple of days ago and I've been trying my hand again at it.

It makes the game way more balanced and i'm enjoying the heck out of it!

Two more hours of Dragon Warrior II tonight. Two more hours of grinding in the Rhone cave, but still no mysterious hat for Princess Peta. I think I'm going to go to Hargon's Castle the next time I play.

Super Mario Bros. 3, was testing it out on my NES, after moving it and such.

Oddly enough, an N-Spade appeared after the very first level, and wouldn't disappear, no matter how many times I lost. I don't have a Game Genie, so.

P

You mean you played the memory game over and over and it never disappeared?

I remember had such trouble finding how to get to that cave the first time I played. Haven't had time to play DQ lately. Last time I played, I found the Silver Harp in Garai's grave and now I need to level grind there before I can move south. I tried moving south but a shadow knight almost killed me so I flew back to Ladutorm castle using the Ruura spell quicker than quick.

Nightstar699

Dinowars/DinoCity, on Super Famicom. Beat it on hard mode, in one credit. My first time playing it on that setting. Unforgiving, but doesn't take away from the fun whatsoever.
So ends another chapter in the glorious legend of the Ninja... Until next time...
