Is that some kind of joke which I should understand, but don't? Or are you just being a goof, haha? The new iMac's are SHWEET!

I may end up just building a computer from scratch and install the hacked os x 10.5 leo on it. :)

133MHz

G5 - Processor made by IBM based on the Motorola PowerPC (PPC) series
Intel - Another microprocessor manufacturer which makes IA-32 and 64 (x86) based chips

Intel never made any PPC based chips, in fact they were their direct competition. They're totally different.

Intel G5 is like a Playstation 3 which plays Xbox 360 games

MaxXimus

I see. Well you learn something new every day. I guess I just assumed G5 was the model of imac. :P

Anyways, an intel imac then. :P

133MHz

Yeah ;).

Heh BTW a few days ago I got a broken PowerMac G3 with a 21" screen, a laser printer and a scanner for 40 bucks ;D. The G3 had a loose video chip which caused wavy lines and graphical glitches across the screen. I've fixed it by heating up the chip with a blowtorch so the solder points re-melted and made good contact again. So now I've got a Mac with a bunch of awesome hardware to play around  :D

I have an iMac g4 with a 17" widescreen

There are a couple things wrong with it though.

If the monitor goes to sleep or the computer is put to sleep, when it turns back on, the backlight goes out and I have to turn the computer off for a minute and then back on for the backlight to work again.

The other issue is that the internal dvd burner drive doesn't read or write dvd's, just cd's. I checked the system info, and it is a dvd burner. What could be wrong?

Your drive uses different lasers for different media.  Your DVD one is fried, but your CD one still works.  It's fairly common.

MaxXimus

So I'm best off to just get a replacement? Possibly and external? :)

UglyJoe

Well it may not be "fried", necessarily.  It could just be wonky.  The only thing I know to do in these cases is to reflash the drive's firmware.  That sometimes fixes it on some drives.

Failing that, you might be able to open up the drive and make some adjustments, but you're probably better off just buying a new drive at that point.

MaxXimus

I may try to reflash the drive's firmware. Any links on info about how to do that? It may seem noobish, but I am great at following directions. I have flashed mac firmware before, as well as my xbox's.

megaman

you mean you have the really flat one.... the notebook?????
that can fit into a envolo..... MAC AIR????

133MHz

Nope, this:

And I have one of these:

MaxXimus

I would never get the mac air. It's a piece of crap which doesn't have much internal hardware which requires external devices, which defeats the purpose. :P

I'd like a macbook pro though. :O

133MHz

Hey that image I stole changes randomly!!! :o

I've never had to flash Mac drives, so my usual sources aren't helping.  I did find this:

Oh, something else to try.  I doubt this will work, but you can try running a lens-cleaning disc in the drive.
