Is it possible to connect two controllers to one port?

Sorry if this question is stupid.
If I were to merge two NES controllers at the cables and that way make two controllers go into one port on my NES (or famicom) would they then work? If not - why not?
The idea would be that one player would play the game normally, but another player could "take over" or tease the player by using the other controller. Or maybe aid the player in button mashers like a "real life turbo-fire assistant"  Also, I would be able to experiment with pushing left and right a the same time, and so on.

Yes it should work AFAIK. Both controller will act as the same controller.
