this is basically a shot in the dark, but here goes.
i got a super mario rpg sfc cart that will boot up but not pass the intro screen. it is very strange , the music plays but the visual will not progress. for anyone who knows super mario rpg, it cuts out right before the screen swoops down in the beginning. i opened it up and the board/pins looked clean, but upon further inspection there was trace amounts of sticky black residue (??) on and around the board (none on pins, just the board)
is it salvageable? or is it junk? i hate to junk a game like super mario rpg , if it was a sports game i would have already chucked it.
I am a big Nintendo fan! especially GameBoy, N64, SFC, GC. And of course Mario games
I collect SFC/N64 mainly. Some rare famicom stuff too. Also miscellaneous video game stuff.

If that thing isn't corrosive or conductive it shouldn't hurt the game by itself. But the fact that it's there might hint that someone has been tinkering with the board. You could do a continuity test on all traces if you have a multimeter.

Hmm,I wonder if maybe the save game is corrupted, other things could be a broken trace, bad cap or maybe one of the chips needs a reflow. If you want I could take a look at it.
