I recently found out about this very cool Goemon clone called Western Kids (Cowboy Kid for the USA) for the Famicom. It plays exactly like the FamicomGoemon, but with much better controls and lots of variety.
Basically you are a Cowboy (and your 2 player cooperative parter is a Native American), you start in this western town where the mayor asks you if you want to be the Sheriff, naturally you say yes and immediately you get to choose to hunt 7 outlaws.

Tasks on the levels involve running through the towns, cemeteries, rivers, farms searching for clues (really easy) while killing Mexicans, Indians and confederate officers, then platforming your way through caves, trains, waterways or mines before confronting the boss.
The only different level (gameplay-wise) is one where you ride your trusty steed through a town shooting bad guys. Oh yeah, before you even enter the town, a judge sends an ugly carrier pigeon with the message to hunt down the outlaw.

If you need to rest, you can go to a hotel and choose between a Suite, Royal Suite (where you get to see the character semi naked) or Horse Stall. Yes you can LOL.

Your weapons (which you get to keep, unlike Goemon) are knives, guns, hammers and others. You can buy stuff in the stores such as food, maps, vests, hats (just like Goemon) and the way you collect money is through gambling, chests or pots (again just like Goemon). The game even rips off Frogger in one level (check the pics).

The last level is even a huge labyrinthical palace, just like Goemon's last stage.

My conclusion? It's definitely worth a try. The controls are good, the gameplay is simple, the music is great, there's a decent amount of variety and there are a lot of graphical and textual details that add up to the overall experience if you bother to look around.

In my opinion, the only bad thing the game has is that it's too easy and the jumping can be a little floaty.
