Sometimes I get items from Japan that have a smell of what I think is tobacco. It is a sweet, musky smell, a bit pungent at first , but not unpleasant.
Not at all like normal tobacco.
Is it tobacco or something else ?

I seem to get all sorts of smells from around the world. My first Famicom smelled like "Grandmother's Attic" :D

It's really hard to tell.
I also noticed that some items have different smell and I think I know that smell you described, but I'm not sure about it either.

:D Maybe it is pipe tobacco. Xious might know...

It may very well be from kiseru smoking, but I'm not sure which odor you're describing. Much of what I receive from Nippon has some sort of bouquet, which I feel adds to its ambiance. :bomb:

Space heaters.. the kerosene or gas burning type.  Very common over there.

Good theory! That even makes sense!
Those heaters really smell a bit and I could imagine that certain items take on that smell.

A lot of my equipment smells like tobacco, and one cartridge in particular has a cat urine smell to it. Not very pleasant. I also receive pieces that seem to be doused with incense. I suppose the Japanese are into a lot of incense burning?

Hehe my arcade smells of cat "stuff" too, my old cat liked it too much and he left his smell on it to this day. You can't get rid of it!
