Are there any Famicom controllers with longer cords?

Basically, a friend of mine is wondering if there are any Famicom controllers out there with a longer than normal cord (~3 feet or so) and are still of a decent build quality. He is using a Twin Famicom, by the way.

Thanks everybody!

I use a Hudson Joycard, it's pretty great.  Connects to the expansion port, maybe a four or five foot cord on it?  It has independent three-speed turbo for each button and also seems a little wider than the default pads.  I use it exclusively and will probably be picking up another one soon.

The Hudson joycard is fantastic, although it's set-up only for No.1-player use. You can hand-build a splitter (I can provide schematics if needed) so that you can use two of these, or two of any external cotroller for both players; you will need two extension cables for this job.I really wish that Hudson wired it with a 1P//2P switch, although you an also buy an old-stock multitap that will allow up to four external controllers. Note that some games will not work with an external joycard, and require the built-in controllers, although it is possible to modify the FC to circumvent this. I can also draw schematics for this if needed.

Additionally, there exist joysticks and joycards (a.k.a. joypads) from other companies: The really big name in Nippon is Hori, who made a very wide selection of external controllers. Some of these do have a 1P/2P switch, although these are often joysticks rather than joycards.

Additionally, the Sharp Twin Famicom AN-505 series controllers cables are twice the length of those on the AN-500 series. You may be able to buy these as parts (although they are expensive to import, so it may worthwhile to you in future to buy an AN-505-BK instead) and then you can simply swap them in place of the normal controllers. This means you will have all normal controller functions, including the Player-No.2 microphone, plus turbo switches.

The last method is to buy insulated wire and re-wire the controllers with new cables. (You will need one six-connection wire, and one seven-connection wire. You can splice the original connectors onto a new cable, and solder the other end onto the controller PCB, giving you full command over your cable length. (If you go over 3m in length, I suggest using a shielded cable with individually insulated wires.)

This task is easy-peasy if you (or anyone you know) is a hand at soldering.

If you ever decide to buy an AN-505, you have a few options. If you want one from a USA dealer (under warranty), I sell them. You can also import one; if you buy one that is defective (for parts/junk/scrap), I can service it for you; I restore both the system itself, and the drive mechanism.

I can also modify your controllers for you if you desire: I offer both cable lengthening and turbo modifications (as separate upgrades). :bomb:

The AV Famicom only has NES-style controllers and not the built in controllers of the other Famicom versions. Or are you talking about external controllers like the Hudson Joycard? If you do then yes, they connect through the EXP port like on all other Famicoms.

I agree, this HoneyBee joypad almost instantly became my favorite one (right after AN-505-BK ones ;)).

Cord length is exactly 1 meter but, what is also important, it's slightly bigger than other joypads - it feels much more handy.

Lol, that's literally the picture I took of my expansion controller to show other members a long while ago.

I snatched it off of Google!  There's actually another kind that looks like this, for the OP:

It's the SSS, which actually has a built-in headphone jack on it.  I got a bid in on one so I'm kinda anxious to try it out.

UglyJoe

I have four of those, but they're the NES versions.  Probably my favorite controller of all time.  Would love to get a FC version some time.  (Don't worry, I'm not bidding on one now ;))

I was looking for one of those exact controllers a few years ago, but never lucked out. Good luck on your bid. I am not bidding either.

If it's an AV Famicom, simply get the NES 2 controllers. Exact same factory look with massively longer cord.

You can use the Hori, Hudson and other expansion port controllers on the New Famicom (A/V) as well. the port is on the side of the console.  :bomb:

Hmm, I think the Hori is a bit too stiff, and seems to not work that well with all games...? Also, I noticed in SMB3 it has a tendency to press right on the d-pad by itself...

Thanks everybody! Yup, sorry for not clearing it up, the system that my friend is using is a Twin Fami, so I just need an EXP port controller.

Xious, I sent you a PM regarding the AN-505 controllers.
