Has anybody ever bought or actually played one of these consoles? Can you vouch for the quality? I mean, I read somewhere that they aren't actually even Famiclones, but actual Famicoms with modded AV outputs and what not.

I'm actually quite interested to hear first hand accounts of people's experiences with these systems, as well as just general thoughts and comments. I know none of this is by any means new, but I just recently found out about these consoles whilst surfing around this weekend.

Brilliant point 80'sFREAK. I was rather confused by one of their claims, they (Tea4Two) said that one of their models of Famicoms has 3D Surround audio? What on earth is that, or rather, what does that mean for a system that's 20+ years old?

As mentioned, it's a regular Famicom with bleached white case and new stickers etc. They also AV mod them and regarding the audio, it's another mod that basically creates a pseudo stereo effect. All it does is split various channels into different left/right outputs. It's not really true stereo. Personally I don't like the effect as sounds aren't mixed properly, it just randomly throws some sound into the left channel and others to the right.

Ugh that sounds...pretty bad. I've always appreciated dual mono, I was just confused when I read that it had 3D Stereo sound. It seems like its a lot of money and hype for nothing.  :upsetroll:

There's guides/kits available on how to do the mod yourself. Search YouTube for demonstrations of it, I think it sounds really tacky.

Stereo sound isn't just randomly mixing sounds into different channels, thought goes into the process and sounds are mixed at different levels based on many factors.

The way this mod seems to work is a little like:

Take sound output from channel 1 and pan it 100% left
Take sound output from channel 2 and pan it 100% left
Take sound output from channel 3 and pan it 100% left
Take sound output from channel 4 and pan it 100% right
Take sound output from channel 5 and pan it 100% right
Take sound output from channel 6 and pan it 100% right

I've got one those  fully decked out. I like it, but it is pretty pricey. The extra long controller cords is a nice option too for someone that wants to use an "original" style famicom.

For most people you're probably better off just getting a factory A/V famicom or maybe a Sharp Twin. I've got both of those too and a bunch of other famicom hardware.

It's marketing :) Famicom has mono audio output. That's all. You can make pseudo stereo by shifting phase of the signal between channels on certain frequencies, but it will sounds weird.
The whole point of stereo sound is making "sound picture", where sources of sound/noise placed more to the left or more to the right from center(mono sound). And, it's obvious, this must be supported by software.
I don't buy, sell or trade at moment.
But my question is how hackers at that time were able to hack those games?(c)krzy

Thank you for clearing that up 80sFREAK and Frank_fjs, I had a feeling it was nothing more than "marketing speek". Still though I think they look rather nice, but one of the things that bothers me is the label on the front where the "Family Computer" text would be. I know they did it for copyright reasons, but I think it would bother me too much in the end.

It's harder challenge, than Elite, cos Dune II(Dune II. Battle for Arrakis) has never released for Famicom/NES. PC, Sega MD(EU)/Genesis, Amiga are on the list.
On it, I'll see what I can do!  :D I'll post it to the Custom Famicom Cart Label thread when finished.
