Don't listen to the recommendations of bootleg / hack / pirate software, you're better off playing the real deal first.

I second Yume Penguin Monogatari, it's a great platformer.

Here's my suggestions for

Famicom games:

Holy Diver - A good Castlevania clone with Dio as the main character

Wai Wai World 2 - The first game requires a bit of Japanese comprehension, the sequel requires none. A very fast-paced action game with lots of variety.

Spartan X 2 / Kung Fu 2 - Japan only sequel to Kung Fu. Graphics are really impressive in this game.

Lickle - This was released on the NES as Little Samson, but as Little Samson is extremely rare and expensive, seek this out instead. Cute platformer with lots of variety.

Layla - I like this game a lot, weird atmosphere similar to Metroid with shmup bonus levels.

Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti - Famicom spoof of the Splatterhouse games.

Kid Dracula - Cutesy platformer with a young Alucard from Castlevania as the main character.

SD Hero Soukessen - Great side-scroller with characters like Ultraman, Masked Rider, Gundam and Kikaider. Very similar to Wai Wai World 2.

Crisis Force - Barring Summer Carnival Recca, this is the best shooter available on the Famicom, one of Konami's best.

Famicom Disk System:

Nazo Murasame Jo / Mysterious Castle of Murasame - GREAT overhead action game set in feudal Japan with a sci-fi twist, very similar to Zelda.

Ai Senshi Nicol / Love Warrior Nicol - Very cool overhead adventure game in a sci-fi setting, similar to Blaster Master and Startropics.

3D Hot Rally - Very fun official Nintendo racing game with very nice graphics and good music.

Bio-Miracle Bokutte Upa - Sidescrolling action game starring baby Upa! Nothing else like it.

Super Famicom

Go Go Ackman! 1 2 3 - The Ackman series is a great platforming series designed by Akira Toriyama of DragonBall fame.

Ganbare Goemon 2 - All the Goemon games are great, but if you're wary of Japanese text, stick with the second game in the series.

Rockman & Forte / Megaman & Bass - Released on the GBA a few years ago, the Super Famicom version is very impressive.

Pop'n Twinbee - The best Twinbee shooter ever made.

Twinbee Rainbow Adventure - A great Twinbee action game spin-off.

Parodius - The classic Konami shooter series makes it's mark on the Super Famicom.

Hope this list helps a bit! :)

Wow, thanks for the true to the heart list. I really appreciate it.

Twinbee - Got me into seeking out famicom games.  Still great!
Destiny of an Emperor II - I'm a huge fan of ROTK.  Standard RPG format, great story.
Binary Land - Fun puzzle game, great for playing on gameboy sp.
AV Dragon Mahjong (unlicensed) - Not really a mahjong title, but tetris with Mahjong tiles.  Theoretically this has 8 bit porn too, although I have played it quite a bit without seeing any!

Thats it so far, just getting started! :)
GRRR!

I like to glitch old VHS tapes and turn them into visuals for live music events. Check out what I'm working on - www.instagram.com/tylerisneat
