Hi Guys,
this is my fisrt post after recently finding this wonderful site.
Not long ago i puchased a used famicom from ebay, i tried to tune the pic, could just see the pic but could never get it clear (was always distorted). Plus there was no sound, just a constant high pitch tone.

i decided to open up and have a look and was suprised and disapointed to see the console had numerous wires attached to the boards also had a aftermarket rf module (makko toys ltd rf board).

anyway, i would just like to see if there is anyone who could help me.
i would like to try and AV mod the console but would like to know if i should disable any of the current wires that have been attached?
for example the on/off switch wires dont go to where they normally go on a unmodded famicom.
Also there is no ribben cable between the rf module and the main board, hence all the extra wires i'm assuming?
i have attached some pics of how the boards currently are.

also it looks like where the power come in from (7805 chip) must be getting really hot, or the heat sink is not really working as it seems to be really brown/burning up on the board around this chip.

so do i leave it as is and just AV mod it or should i remove some certain wires....

i would greatly apreaciate any help i could get in trying to fix this patched up console.

And how much did you paid for this "mod"?  :o Dunno, who ever did this, but that person even couldn't cut PCB straight  :o
RF board is not original. Heatsink? Too small.
Here is sticky thread about AV mod. Read it. It's all there.
I don't buy, sell or trade at moment.
But my question is how hackers at that time were able to hack those games?(c)krzy

Thanks 80sFREAK,
I bought the famicom the way it is now, I didn't do any extra mods to it so far. I only saw this when I opened it up :(

You are right, it looks like the heat sink is not doing it job, so I may have to replace it?

I have seen and gone through the AV mod guide and believe I should be able to do it fairly straight forward.

But should I remove or fix any if the current wires/mods that are there already or just leave it as is?

keropi

maybe you famicom is a later model of the HK version shown here: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=4138.0 , and they just hired lazy nobodies to do the modifications  :o

If you are sure in your soldering skills, remove all that trash and make new wiring

It's one of the unofficially modded Famicoms common in Asia, known as the Makko Toys version. It's an official Famicom (Japanese or Hong Kong version) but it has the RF-board replaced with a custom one (note the "Family Game" logo and the "Makko Toys ldt" text). It's explained in that post keropi linked to if you scroll down to the second picture after the explanation of the Hong Kong version.

But this one has a lot more wires than the ones I've seen and the ribbon is usually not missing either. It usually has an extra switch where it says Slow/Normal supposedly for 50Hz use but yours seems to have only one switch.

i've done a bit of reading on the forum and i see what you mean about the unoffcial modded pal versions.
i dont know what happened to the ribbon??

if i remove all the old wiring? is there anyone that could mark on the pics i posted where i should solder new wiring.
PS i would only need help to rewire power im guessing? as i can follow the guides for the AV mods.
thanks

You can leave everything if you want its not going to hurt anything the RF signal is going to be disabled once you AV mod it anyway

GPM-02 has no ribbon cable. This part is nicely sliced off.

I see, the GPM-02 board has the RF-modulator as a part of the board instead of a separate board so they needed to cut that part of the board out to fit in the Makko RF-board.

Yeah it's easier to not to remove the cables. Even if you are not gonna use RF you still need the power from the AC-adapter that's connected to it in the back.

ahh, so this board never had a ribbon cable...  that explains why the board seems cut.

also, just a question regarding the AV mod, i understand PIN 1 & PIN 2 can be tapped for sound but it will not include the enhanced sound from the FDS, so my question is where on this board could i tap into to get the enhanced sound also?

just want to say thanks to everyone on this forum and to all the effort that has gone into the guides available.
i now have a working, AV modded famicom as you can see in the pic below. i am really happy with the results, there is very minor jailbars but hardly noticable and 100% better than it was before.

Very nice work. Glad to hear you have it all fixed up! Now, let's see some shots of your handiwork!!
