Hey guys,

I'd like to look for someone who is willing to perform an AV mod for my famicom in my area. I know I can just get an AV famicom which I may do in the future, but I love the authenticity of playing on an original famicom (especially with the mic, it never gets old).

There is a store in my area that is willing to do it, however from my understanding they just mod the video to output via the RF port - so there is no chance in video quality. From reading on the forums here I am under the impression there is a better way to do this so that you can get real AV out without the jailbars effect. In addition to this I'd be interested in also modding the cable length on the controllers as well, I'm sure that would be a much easier mod to perform.

Does that make sense? Are my assumptions correct here? If so this is the type of mod I am looking to have performed. I would love to meet up locally in the NJ/NYC tri-state area with somebody trustworthy (I am willing to travel to them). I am frankly not skilled enough to perform such a mod on my own.

Let me know if anyone is in the area and up for the task, or knows of somebody!

The odds of finding someone skilled with Famicoms locally is extremely low. You will have to ship your Famicom somewhere or buy a pre-modded Famicom.

I can AV mod Famicoms but I'm up in Canada.

I can do it too, but also in Canada. I think there a couple of other modders in the US here who can hook you up though!  8)

This is your fault because I want to play all those DQ and FF games you sent me.  ;D

Thanks guys, appreciate the offers and I will keep them in mind. If nobody steps up I know who to call.  :)

I think the Famicom would be a great beginner project for you. It requires about $5 worth of parts, after you invest in a basic soldering kit. It's not too difficult, as long as you understand the basics of soldering and following 80sfreak's directions.

I agree. It's not too hard to do, as long as you're good with soldering and using power tools to cut with!

You can do the mod using alligator clips until you have it right and then solder it together while you are learning. Also you can just run av cable straight out the back next to the controller cable without needing to damage the case. Just another option for you  ;D
