A friend of mine is in China at the moment and I'd like him to scout out the Famiclone scene, so I thought knowing the proper term for them would help him in the task  I appreciate the help!.

little red white machine.  Everyone will know what he is looking for.  If he can get me some cheap Waixing games, I would gladly return the favor somehow ;)

In simplified Chinese 电子游戏 is "Video game" actually "Electronic game".  Pinyin pronunciation is Diànzǐ yóuxì.  Don't know what famiclone would be but any place that sells video (as opposed to computer) games should have some clones.

Not sure if that helps or not.

I think if he just asks for that, he will not get very far, as videogames is quite a broad thing, ranging from Atari to Wii+ . also including PC games.  Mayb it is different in China, but in Taiwan if I ask for that, I am just shown modern PC games ;)

Yeah, that's very possible. I was let to believe that the ubiquitous Famiclone was and still is very popular since a lot of the never systems were not sold (legally) in China. My Chinese friend said the clones were at nearly every game shop.  But this was a while ago so maybe things have changed.  Never been to China myself.  I'd love to hear a follow up to this thread to see what it's really like.

from my experience looking for these things on Chinese sites, you might have some luck with some of the following:

红白机 hóng bái jī "red/white machine" (as fcgamer said)
8位 8 wèi "8-bit"
FC - self-explanatory I hope
小霸王 xiǎo bàwáng - Subor, a popular famiclone brand
黄卡 huáng kǎ "yellow card" - sometimes used to describe Famicom cartridges because the vast majority of carts produced in China these days are yellow
任天堂 rèntiāntáng "Nintendo" (seems to be used more in Taiwan though)

also some generic gaming-related terms:
游戏机 yóuxì jī "game machine"
游戏卡 yóuxì kǎ "game card"
some of my stuff: twitter // super multi // handheld underground
