Hi fellow gamers!

I have a Japanese Nintendo Famicom HVC-101.

But i havent got a power supply lead!

I've read about correct voltage and polarity AC/DC settings but to be honest I'm lost and confused! I just dont wanna blow my baby up!

The underneath on the console states - DC10V 850mA

I hereby call upon the help of a Wizard to grant me a safe endless gaming passage suitable for the vast lands of the United Kingdom!

For my famicom I just use sega master system power supply 9v 1amp with the centre pin negative.  That should see you through.

RetroReg

How about if i cant get hold of a sega master system adapter, is a universal one suitable? whatspecs do i need to look out for?

mamejay

Yeah that is fine.  As long as its 9-12V and 1amp.
You have to make sure that the centre pin is negative

mamejay

That would be fine as long as it has the correct size connector which it probably would have.

You just need to make sure that the polarity of positive and negative is correct.  Negative needs to be in the middle.
This adapter you can change it so you shouldn't have a problem.

First thing you should look at is if it is an AC/DC adapter and not an AC/AC adapter (step-down) like the NES use.
Second look at the output on the AC/DC adapter. Famicom requires DC10V 850mA as you said and thus your adapter must output 10v direct current (DC). This has to match, if it is higher it might damage your system. You can set that adapter to 9v and you should be fine. One volt too little shouldn't be a problem. The Ampere doesn't have to match, it just has to have at least as much as required. That one outputs 1000 mA (when set at 9v) so that shouldn't be a problem with that adapter.

Then you should look at the polarity of the cable. If it has wrong polarity you will damage your system. That one has reversible polarity as mamejay said so be careful to not put it the wrong way.

The input on the adapter should match whatever you have in the wall outlets in your country (230v in UK).

The type of connector is the least problem and if it doesn't fit in to your wall there are travel adapters available that takes care of that problem (they don't convert the current though). The plug that goes in to the Famicom of course also has to fit.

Thanks for all the advice Mamejay and P...

I'm sure I fully understand by the way you broke it down for me!

I cant wait to get it set up in y games room and play Contra! I havent played that game on the Famicom since 1988!

Thanks again!

UPDATE

I've finally got the correct AC/DC power UK adapter.  I used an AV scart lead (same as SNES), but when I turned it on I got sound but a distorted picture!

I tried it on other TVs in the house but I got the same result! I read on the net about 50/60hz compatible etc, but i'm lost in translation!

Somebody please advise what i need to do to play my JAP Famicom on a TV in the UK...

Xious

You'll need an A/V kit to make it work properly, as your display uses PAL, whereas the FC is NTSC, but your Telly will likely accept A/V NTSC signals. I also advise using a power transformer (step-down adapter; 210VAC to100VAC) if you decide to use Japanese PSUs... :bomb:

Is this still suitable if my UK Pal TVs are only 50hz?

On a fellow Famicom gamers recommendation, i purchased a N64/Gamecube TV lead (red/white/yellow) instead of using my SNES PAL scart lead but i got the same distorted result...

P

As you have an AV Famicom it already has AV so you don't need this kit.
To answer your question, it would still be 60Hz and thus still wouldn't work if your TV doesn't support 60Hz (sometimes called PAL60).

Now we know that it's probably not a faulty AV cable at least (if you want to be 100% sure just test it on your SNES). Save that AV cable (red/white/yellow) as you will need it when you get your console to work!

IT WORKS!

MY MOTHER HAS A 50/60HZ TV!

BUT I HAVENT!  SHE WONT SWAP AND I CANT AFFORD TO BUY A NEW TV!

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE FELLOW FAMICOM GAMERS!

I'M GOING TO SELL IT ON EBAY - 140623054337 IN A FEW HOURS

THANKS AGAIN
