Hate life, need booze badly...

It's been another of those months...

I had a convention in January that ate up some of my time by itself, and then it all started to rain down when the data that my associate had prepared for me, for use during the convention went up in smoke, literally, when he cracked his Dell open like a henfruit... naturally, his HDD went with it, and we spent the next two-and-a-half days getting zero sleep recreating all of it, and the following two days demonstrating.

Then I though, 'Alright, that was long and hard, but it's time to get back to business.:  Oh, how wrong can a man be...?

Two weeks ago, a couple days after I returned from a convention, the SSD on my XP system lost its mind: The partition tables became entangled somehow, and although it mounts under Linux, it refuses to do so when running WindoSe... I tried NTFSfix to restore it, and that game a mounting error on both occasions.

Naturally, it is one of those lovely WWAN PCIe cards, so it's a bloody pain to mount externally. I had a special adapter for them, but it vanished from my work area.

For the time-being, i swapped it for another smaller SSD with Ubuntu 10.04, which did not like my PCIe WWAN WiFi card. it took me four swaps to find one that it would use, and even that was not reliable, so I had to run a 30m Cat-6 cable across the place. I still do not have the SSD repaired...

Any suggestions on tools to repair a NTFS partition table under Linux are appreciated in this area, although it may just be the NAND memory failing.

Then I received a letter of violation from the city about what I may store on my property, so I need to fight them in court. Always a blessing.

Then, on 29th january, my mobile rang with an unknown local number. That essentially never happens: No-one local ring me unless I know them. It was some lady that received the rent cheque on my warehouse, which UPS delivered one street away from its destination, at a flat instead of an office. 'How is that even possible?', I though to myself, so I had to resolve that before I ran into landlord trouble.

This week, I was supposed to receive a new order of chemicals, including some DeOxIt, which I use for restoring systems. it was then switched to 'Status: back-ordered' and took an extra five days to arrive. Then my Internet connection started refusing to, and today, to add a cherry onto this 'fudge' sundae, my server went down and I had to spend three telephone conversations with my co-lo to resolve it.

now I ask you... Does this happen to other people, or was I singled-out by some sadistic demi-god for this punishment?

I'm sure there's a 'rants' area. A mod can of course move this as required, but I just thought I'd tell everyone what a lovely time i am having, and give you a good place to tell me about all of your problems. Misery loves company, after all... :bomb:

P.S. If any of you wondered where I have been, now you know. For the record, my connection seems to be steady for the present, but one never knows what will happen.

Everyone has periods of time like this where it seems like every sentient being in existance is out to receive pleasure from you failing miserably. And I think most, if not all long-time members have had their own thread dedicated to the suckage in their life.

Yeah, sometimes life sucks. And when it does, everything sucks at the same time.

I hope you get over that period of bad luck quickly!

what do you mean by NTFS partition table?

partition table (PT) is the independent entity stored in the first sector of the disk. Each partition field contains only few data values, such as first sector of the partition and the length of it.

To repair PT you should use testdisk utility.

But if the file system (FS) on the partition is broken (and it cannot be mounted) you should use FS repairing tools. Every FS type needs its own repairing tool. Sorry i don't dealing with NTFS for a long time, don't know about how to repair it.

did you start to backup you data since all that happens?
if not these things will happen again and again.

I am happy, the sun is shining, and I have met some friendly exchange students lately...

Yeah, my own error. The Master FIle Table, is the problem. Either bad data was written to the MFT, or there are bad bits on the NAND chip containing it. This is why it will mount after a while in Linux. Windows will even try to boot, but after a short while it blues out. I keep backup sets on multiple drives, optical media, and NAND media.

Thus, all of my data is backed up to the day it happened, within minutes: I maintain perpetual backs in triplicate... That isn't the issue. The problem is that it is generally a hue pain to back up and then restore the XP installation itself, so while I still have all the data and programmes, restoring the OS to exactly the way I had it manually is hit or miss. It would be far simpler to repair the MFT and get it running, then do a backup onto another SSD, and do a system repair.

As this is the only Windows system I have in use, repairing it needs to be from Linux. I it doesn't boot, I can't restore it from itself. In any case, it isn't as if I lost any actual work: it is merely a huge drain in my time, and it would probably be best if I just gave it to one of those 'Windows-fixer' guys, as I could then fpcus on what I need to do, which makes more per hour than it would cost. Before I do that, I will need to buy another PCIe (WWAN) to USB adapter, an wipe all sensitive files from the SSD. :bomb:

Why Linux... thought i am using Kubuntu 11.0 you can save your hdd using hirane's boot cd... or boot a windows live cd... so your hard disk is partitioned with ntfs and ext3? And you can't access your nfts partition? I might be able to help you because i have rescued many hdd's both ext 2/3 and ntfs/fat...

Life is pretty craptastic for me lately. Husband finally got a job but now he has this whole god complex because he works and i stay home because putting our son in child care would negate any wages i would bring in he thinks he doesn't have to do anything with our son nor do anything around the house!
I've spent the last few nights attempting to convince my friend who has a whole bunch of problems that make mine look trivial that killing herself would not be a great idea even though i've considered doing it myself lately. I only have one other friend i can hang out with in this country and husband doesn't like her because she tells it like it is and he's not good at dealing with reality anymore.
I've decided that i'm going to go to the states for a month for a holiday to meet some of my awesome internet friends but i'm going to have to sell some of my gaming stuff so i can afford airfares!

Sorry i'm completely useless when it comes to operating systems and fixing computers though i can assemble them thats about it!
I have a bottle of Jack in the fridge waiting for ya though!
