I think those numbers reflect the order that Taito released them in on the Famicom. For instance, the one with "10" on it was their 10th Famicom release.

Awesome! That actually was what my guess was going to be.  I wonder if there is a list of the numbers or games in the order they were released

This is correct.

Galaxian was the first Namco release and one of the first third-party games.

Taito is actually one of my favorite FC game developers. A slim majority of my FC carts are black, mostly because it was the main color used by Taito (and Konami... another major company for my FC collecting).

How good was the FC Galaxian compared to other versions?

I'm not an expert on early shmups, and I've only played copies of the FC port of Galaxian on pirate carts. I thought it played ok, but I've never been a huge fan of the game. It's kind of an awkward transitional step from the primitive glory of Space Invaders to the more mature effort of Galaga.
