Hello I'm having issues with my famicom.

It's powering on...I feel heat after a while. But no video or audio.

Any suggestions? All the caps look good.

Dead CPU or PPU, or bad 7805 voltage regulator. No picture at all, or solid color? Any mods, or completely stock?

Icelvlan

It's all stock. I have some voltage regulators coming in. Is there something else I can check? Anyone from this forum sell PPUs or CPUs? Is there a way to pin point which one is the issue?

Where are you at? Do you know if your TV can take any other Japanese devices that uses RF?

Icelvlan

I'm located in Canada. I'm pretty sure it is...I've tried in on an multiple TVs.

Probably easier to buy another famicom than to replace the PPU/CPU.
Buy one that is tested and works.

Although, the regulator is a cheap component and relatively easy to replace. You can measure if you get 5V from it.

Exactly! Which is why you should rule out any other problems before assuming the worst.

Hi

Try testing with a multimeter if you get 5.0 volts in the output of the regulator. Also, test for 5 volts on the input of the CPU and PPU chips. You can also try turning it on, leaving it for a while and see if some chip gets too hot, that might indicate a problem with that chip. Sorry, those are all the tricks I can think of without using an oscilloscope or other more advanced tools to diagnose.

Regards.

I also feel that the famicom i bought might be a clone. Can anyone confirm if it's real? The PPU and CPU are in sockets and i cannot find Nintendo written anywhere.

I'm getting 5V from the 7805. I also noticed the PPU and CPU generate heat.

It's a famiclone for sure (Nintendo never socketed chips on retail products AFAIK), however it's a "good"famiclone. I have a really similar one, and you can even swap the CPU/PPU for original Nintendo ones and it works without any problem. The fact that the CPU and PPU get warm is not a bad sign, but if they get hot to the touch, it might mean they are broken. Try getting original Nintendo CPU and PPU to try, since they are in sockets, are easy to replace. What I did was getting a broken NES board (fortunately the broken parts weren't the CPU or PPU) and desolder them.
