If you just want to play Neo Geo games and aren't a collector nerd, the cheapest way to do it is either get a consolized MVS, or buy an MVS->AES converter.

yeah, but I like the original home hardware. I'm interested in collecting for it too, but maybe not as hardcore as some of those dudes on neo geo.com where they insist that it has a friggen plastic baggie for the manual for it to be cib. thats just too hardcore.

If you like the home hardware, buy an MVS->AES converter and get a Unibios installed  :)

There are different features in some AES versions as opposed to their MVS version.  The ROMS are the exact same thing, but the game differs depending on the BIOS it's running under.  Plus you can also switch to the Euro region which would give you English text + blood.  It has cheat features and a bunch of other crap as well.  Once my MVS 4 slot arrives, I'm going to burn a Unibios and also a Euro region BIOS.

theres a few reasons i dont think its worth it

1. I dont know how to do it myself so i'd have to pay a significant amount to get it modded
2. the only thing *USEFUL* you get out of modding it is english text with blood, who cares when the english translations of snk games suck ass anyway and I can read Japanese decently.
3. Cheats are for n00bs.

im happy with the system i bought, its a japanese neo geo, it works great, and i can play samurai showdown. what more can you ask?

I never said you shouldn't be happy w/what you have.  My point was if you want a cheaper way to play the games, an MVS is the way to go.  Good luck ever getting your hands on an AES Metal Slug.  Even the MVS conversions will run you at least $150.  The MVS cart itself can be had for about $30, less if you want a bootleg.  My main draw of the Unibios is playing the AES only features of MVS carts.  The MVS BIOS is socketed so it couldn't be easier, just costs a couple bucks for the EPROM.

I was thinking of just getting metal slug 5 instead of the original, metal slug 5 is only 350, so thats not that bad

Or the MVS version can be had for well under $100  ;D

Does anybody know a list with all Neo Geo games listed by genre?
I'm interested in the system, but I don't know much about the games except shooters and 2D fighting games.

Were there platformers (like Mario, Rayman,...) or RPGs on the Neo Geo?

madman

Aside from shooters and 2D fighters, you aren't left with much.  Check out neo-geo.com and look at the screen shots.  There's some sports games, most of which suck.  Some good puzzle games, a couple racing games and that's pretty much it.

Thanks for the link. Seems like an interesting site.
But they need to do some google search improvements. I wouldn't find them on google with my queries. ;)

I looked around a bit on neo-geo.com and looked at their screen shots.

Blue's Journey looks interesting as a platformer.

And I found 2 RPG-ish titles.
Crossed Swords
Crossed Swords II

That's not too much. :-\
Apart from that Neo Bomberman and Waku Waku 7 looked interesting.
