manuel earlier in the thread confirms its not gryzor with the pic, and so does satoshi matrix if you can read what he typed, and so does joe.

the characters on the box , manual, and game, say

コ = ko
ン = n
ト = to
ラ = ra

the kanji says the same thing, but the kanji doesnt actually carry a meaning that makes any sense, well i mean it kinda does, but its gibberish to me.

It was edited in the european release, all the enemies became robots, i think they changed the name to get rid of any relation to the iran contra affair, so they changed it for europe. all other countries it is contra, I dont know where this gryzor bullshit comes from. the box says contra for christ sakes!

From what I was able to gather (from looking it up previously), there's three names for it.

There's Contra, as it's known in North America (and Japan!).

There's Probotector, which is the name of the European version that was censored a bit (most notably, Lance and Bill are robots).

Then, there's Gryzor.  As far as I can tell, the Commodore 64 version and the Amstrad CPC version were called Gryzor.

What confuses me is why so many people think the Japanese version is called Gryzor as well.

MarioMania

because on ROMnation "Gryzor"  was listed as the Japanese Name...I thought it would be under Contra (J)

satoshi_matrix

Contra came out for the Commodore?! MAN I've gotta check that out!

kite200

also for msx

um, I found the rom under Contra (J) before I had the cart, I think it just depends on who you get it from

msx ports of famicom games tend to suck, even though the msx is a real computer, the famicom is the more powerful system. if you buy the book family computer 1983-1994, there is an interview with hideo kojima where he talks about this, since metal gear was originally released for msx

Ok, then. It'll get changed on the site...when I remember to change it. 8)

You're right there. The kanji don't carry a meaning there and were only used phonologically.

魂, which can be read "kon" or also "tamashii" means "spirit" or "soul"
斗 (to) is a measure of volume and approximately 18 liters
羅 (ra) is a type of silk goods and basically means "something thin"
