Ummmm.....Awesome!!!  I hope they make a Famicom version.  I'd rather buy that one.  FYI, this is legit and the news came straight from Nintendo.

I was just about to post this ;D

It's an impressive list of games.  I was expecting to see the usual Nintendo pulse-line / black-box titles, but they seem to have gone the extra mile and licensed stuff from other publishers.

I wonder what the hardware will be, though.  System-on-a-Chip? Emulator?

Oh, the press release has a lot more info:

http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160714005388/en/

- The controller can be plugged into a Wii Remote and used with the Virtual Console.
- It supports multiple "suspend points" for each game.

I'm going to guess it's not a SoaC because of the suspend points feature (although it wouldn't completely rule it out).

I also was about to post about this. I hope they release a famicom version. Also anyone think it will have AV support?

It's HDMI, so I doubt it.

I've really been putting off upgrading my TV from a CRT maybe this is a sign it's time. Of course I'll still be keeping my CRT.

I just saw this article and thought it was a joke at first! I can't believe it's actually real! :) This is a great value for just $60. That list of 30 games is perfect and I'm also glad that there are 3rd party games on it. The best part is also how the controller is compatible with the Wii and it's only $10!!!!! This plug-n-play console is going to be a hot toy this holiday season because everyone every age is going to want this!

I would really like to see a Famicom version of this, but I think that might not be possible. With a Famicom Mini console, the regular sized controllers wouldn't fit on the mini console's plastic casing. It would be great if Nintendo made a SNES one and then N64 and continue making reproduction retro controllers.

Here's the pic for anyone who hasn't seen it or just can't believe it :0

I thought this was a joke at first...

Now to see whether it's decent quality or not.  Still, HDMI out for $60 bucks, not bad...

So, can any kind Famicom World regular friends in the good old US help me order two of these in time for Christmas?  :)

I'm really pumped about this. The only thing that sucks is I already own all the games but I think it will be great for travel. I hope this drives the outrageous price of retro games down. hopefully we can go back to the heydays when it was a cheap fun hobby and not the resellers dream world it's become.

Lol I posted it in the main board as well haha (now merged here).

My guess is it's a stripped down Wii in there, running VC (hence the suspend points).  So yes I do think we will see SNES versions, maybe even others in time.

GREAT news about the controllers.  We know Nintendo already had that functionality working before Wii launch (they showcased them) but only made SFC versions.

Also glad they have done this - the recent price trend and attention things like the Analogue get seems out of proportion and this new NES Mini is welcome.

Interesting theory.  I guess the Wii hardware would be pretty cheap, nowadays.

Ha, you know what would be awesome, if the cart door opened to reveal an SD card slot and if the system had built in Wifi.  This way you could buy and download new games from their online store, have it save on the SD card, and then bring it to a friend's house to play lol.

They could make their own SD cards with a picture of an NES cartridge on it.

HUUUUUUUGE money maker for Nintendo.  This WILL be the hard to find Christmas gift this year.

NintendoKing

I saw this on Facebook earlier and it was the best news! How cool is it that Nintendo has finally embraced it's retro heritage fully!

Yay! But yeah I'd also buy a Famicom one obviously if that is announced as well.

Maybe gut the system into a mini Famicom body? :)

UPDATE - not the best news but some answers to early questions:

Will the mini-NES be able to connect to the internet?

No. The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices.
The game lineup was chosen to provide a diverse mix of popular and recognizable NES games that appeal to a wide variety of players.
Everyone should be able to find multiple games to enjoy.

On the same note: does Nintendo plan to sell other NES games for the mini-NES beyond the 30 it comes preloaded with?

No. The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices.
The 30 games included with the system were chosen to provide a wide variety of top-quality, long-lasting game-play experiences.

Are there plans for other mini-consoles, like a mini-SNES or mini-N64?

We have nothing to announce at this time.

Just because people have been asking: safe to say it can't play old cartridges, right?
Based on the image it looks like an NES cartridge would have around the same width as the entire console.  Does it open up at all?

The console does not use physical media and therefore the Chamber Lid does not open.

I'm kind of iffy how small it looks but it's about the same as a PSTV so.. fine. I've got it on pre-order already with a second NES controller for £52.  :)

Where from?  I'd also like to pre-order one.
