FDS Shutdown issue

So i just did the belt replacement on my disk system. This was a unit that i bought at a second hand store and i wasnt able to use it prior to changing the belt. so anyway i changed the belt and fixed the error 22/27 issue and all seemed to be all good. however a day later i am having an issue where the game will just stop, screen dies, and the system just basically shuts down. i am running it off batteries and i changed those to new ones to make sure that wasnt an issue and that didnt help, i also swapped out the ram cart (i had an extra) just to make sure but still no help. also i tried the system with a regular famicom game and had no issue so i have narrowed it down to something with the disk system.

any ideas?

capacitors? power somehow? i mean i dont totally know how the system works with power after the game is loaded to the ram, but it seems like it shouldnt matter at that point (though it may). even so the power doest seem to be the issue but again any ideas?

I don't think batteries could make it shut down. They are only needed for the disk drive, the RAM Adapter is running on the Famicom's power. You should even be able to unplug the drive once the game has loaded into the RAM Adapter and still be able to play. And if you had battery problems it usually shows as an error.

Since you changed the RAM Adapter I guess the culprit is the Famicom or the AC adapter. Maybe the RAM Adapter takes more power than many regular carts. I'm mostly guessing here though.

What AC Adapter are you using?

a normal Nintendo (Japan) adapter, should mention im in japan. model number HVC-002

I see, the HVC-002 are old and often fail to provide enough juice nowdays. I would try a modern AC-DC adapter with the proper specs:

Input (for Japan): 100 V, AC 50~60Hz
Output (for original Famicom, not Twin): 10 V, DC, 850 (850~1100 is OK) mA
Barrel Plug: Outer Diameter 5.5 mm, Inner Diameter 2.1 mm, Center Negative (+)-----(o-----(-)

is there a way to test the hvc-002? also i have others i will try those also and report back.

You can test it with a multimeter or voltmeter while plugged in. Set the multimeter to the closest voltage setting that is higher than what you want to test (10 V) which is probably 20 V DC voltage setting in this case. Put the red probe on the outer barrel and the black inside the barrel plug and then plug it into the wall and see what voltage value you get. Don't touch the metal parts with your body (it's just 10~ V though so nothing will probably happen if you do). To get accurate values you probably need to test it while under load though.

i havent been able to test it just yet but i was also wondering if the voltage regulator could be over heating? i did the av mod on the system and long story short the big metal rf heat sink was removed, i did put a screw on the VR with some nuts to try to make up for the missing heat dispersion. but again would this be an issue when regular carts are fine? seems odd that the issue would be with power when it works for carts just not the ram but my knowledge of the disk system and ram cart is limited. but wouldnt the ram cart be making the same voltage requests/needs that the regular carts would?

sorry kind of just thinking out loud here but any clarification or guidance would be appreciated.

I'm no technician, but I think that the FDS RAM Adapter if it does, as my hypothis suggests, draw more power it probably will cause problems if the voltage regulator can't provide it with enough power. You voltage regulator might need a new heat sink.

Sounds like your console is overheating.

You need to add back the heatsink or install a switch-mode voltage regulator like this one.

so i stuck in a make shift heatsink made with some more washers and a piece of aluminum and it fixed the issue so it was totally an over heating issue. all is working now. thanks for all the help guys.
