is the extra controller port on the famicom only for player 2?
because when i plug in a controller it only works on player 2
this controller port HELP ME!

It depends on how the controller is wired.  If it's a player 2 controller, it will only work as player 2.  If it's a player 1 controller, it will only work as player 1.  If there's a switch, well, it'll work on either depending on what the switch is set to.

Me too, actually.  You'd have to rewire the plug in order to get it to work as a player 1 controller (which basically means you'd need a replacement plug since I don't think you can just cut open the plug and change the wire order).

Since they're standard plugs, you may be able to get a male and female plug at radioshack to build your own rewiring. It really wouldn't be that difficult!

Maybe you could build a pin adapter with standard DB-15 plugs to reroute the necessary wire(s), even add a switch for choosing between Player 1 or 2.

Hey we thought the same nearly at the same time! :o

They say great minds think alike you know :P

The expansion port on the Famicom is deeper than your average DB-15 port.  The wiring would be correct, but it won't be able to reach the pins  :(

satoshi_matrix hacked a PC joystick extension cable, since the plug on it was made entirely of rubber he trimmed it somewhat with a knife and got a perfect fit ;).

UglyJoe

Yeah, I guess you can repurpose some cables.  Something like this would probably work:

MIDI/JOYSTICK/GAMEPORT EXTENSION CABLE 6FT

but a plug like this would end up being too short:

10 Ft DB15 M-F Extension Cable, Joystick/Midi/Mac

Buy a Hudson controller on eBay they have a switch, which works perfectly for going back and forth through player 1 and 2.

It's been suggested that the NWC might play using the ext port. With the NWC, you've got to push Start on the second controller, which the original Famicom doesn't have. So, does anyone know if it would work for that? If you plug the lightgun into the second controller on the NES, it automatically triggers the game to start. I don't have any ext port accessories.
