More Aussies seeing the light!
Famicom > PAL NES

nerdynebraskan

That seems to be an assumption shared by many Europeans. The whole PAL-consoles-running-15%-slower thing seems to be a major turnoff to many vintage players. That, and the PAL library is pretty limited in comparison to what we got here in the States (let alone the really huge Famicom library).

As a European I agree! PAL library sucks even more than US library and we can't even import Japanese games without slowdown. I would only really need to get a PAL NES again if I wanted to play PAL exclusive games.

And there really aren't that many PAL-only Nintendo games. There were a bunch of cool ones like Hammerin' Harry and U-Four-Ia that we didn't get in the States, but there are also Famicom versions of those. I have thought about importing a PAL NES to play games like Asterix and Elite; the PAL-only games are often the ones that don't work right on an NTSC console at all, and some of the others still have minor glitches and speed-up issues on my faster machine. But I'm not sure I could even get one to run on my TV; PAL compatibility seems to be a recent addition to US TVs, and my TVs are almost as old as my 8- and 16-bit games.

Yeah those games are using the extra graphic update time (AKA vertical blank or vblank) between each frame, that the PAL NES has. However PAL games that was first made for NTSC often doesn't use the extra vblank time at all.
It's good to hear that US TVs at least sometimes has support for PAL nowdays.

Nice to meet you Alex!  You're right, it's friendly here :)

Would love to see some pics of the cabs and other items you have.  I'm in London too so appreciate space is a premium here!  A college of mine was working in the states and had a basement full of arcade cabs, he was rathe stuck when he moved back here!

Hello there Community!
After I had troubles finding an username, I finally registered myself an account here. For the last few years I already collected quite a few games for various consoles, of course nothing comparable to some other collections you see on the internet but my room was quite a mess with all these videogame-stuff lying around. The thing was: I never really played a game. I think that many videogame-collectors know how this feels but I did that to the extreme. For months I never touched a game, played like 3 or 4 games in the whole year but kept buying new ones. I had to put an end to this, so I sold most of my games, currently still selling the stuff that is left and it is a good feeling. Maybe someday I'll regret some sales but there wasn't anything really rare in my collection anyway.

Well, this is my rough background story, now the reason why I registered here: My goal is to finally appreciate videogames again for that what they are: games. I choosed just one console I want to buy games for, and finally play them. After I searched through the world-wide-web I thought that the Famicom would be an awesome thing to have. Such a huge game-library with games of all kinds, many games which are considered as classics by the videogaming scene, which I sadly never played. I already found some useful information on the main-page and needed to become a part of the Famicom World community. So, here I am, knowing pretty much nothing about the Famicom, but willingly to learn and become passionate about the Famicom.

I hope that the community can take such a newbie like me, maybe there are some people here who are in the same situation like me and I was thinking about creating Highscore-threads for various games (are there any highscore-threads?) to encourage the community to not only collect Famicom games but also to play them and have fun together with the community.

Soooo ... I think that is enough for the start.
See you in the forum!

Greetings Ginkgo*

Welcome to Famicom World Gingko! There are lots to learn about the Famicom by just looking around at old threads by searching for things that interests you about the Famicom. If you don't find a thread about high scores maybe you can open one.

I don't play so much either lately. But mostly because I don't have time and I know that I will waste a lot of time if I start playing!

senseiman

Welcome to Famicom World, Gingko!  I think if you want a console to actually play games on, then you will be quite happy with the Famicom!  ;D

Thank you@P and senseiman!

So true, I'm still not finished with reading the articles on the mainpage, the forum is a great ressource for anything Famicom.

I'll totally do that. I thought about creating seperate highscore-threads for each, highscore based, game I'll play in the near future. That involves the community, we could talk about strategies and stuff like that. I wonder if the community would like that.

Oh I'm sure that I'll have a lot of fun, Famicom-Games are actual games and not interactive movies like Assassins Creed for example.
Ahh ... enough current gen bashing, I didn't want to get on that level, excuse me, there are some good games on the current gen  :-[

Greetings,
Ginkgo
