That sounds awful!

If I heard a sound like that I'd try to get the disc out as fast as possible.

133MHz

That reminded me of exploding CDs. Mostly an urban legend but the Mythbusters proved that CDs can explode if they're spun faster than 56X speed and I had such an incident about 10 years ago.

I was installing Windows 95 into an old 486 computer with an old 24X CD-ROM drive. The drive was old and finicky but it was still reading fine. It was happily copying files for the Windows setup when all of a sudden I hear the spindle motor stopping and then starting again, but this time I could hear the speed ramping up like a race car and it was followed by a loud BANG!. It was so loud I was scared shitless and even my neighbors got to hear it and they thought it was a gunshot. I had to disassemble the drive to retrieve the shattered remains of my original Windows 95 CD >:( :'(. Needless to say the drive was immediately scrapped.

Apparently the spindle speed controller on these old drives could enter a failure mode where the controller couldn't sense the spindle motor speed, and just kept raising it until the CD violently explodes because of the enormous centrifugal forces acting on it. After that, high-speed CD-ROM drives always made me a little nervous, especially when the spinning disc sounded like a jet engine :o.

Also there was another failure mode in which the automatic braking system didn't work when you pressed the eject button and your disc would come out furiously spinning on top of the plastic tray. Many of my CDs ended up badly scratched because of this :'(.

Ever wondered why CD drives never got faster than 56X? ::)
Fortunately DVDs don't have to spin that fast!

Another great product from Apple.
I like to glitch old VHS tapes and turn them into visuals for live music events. Check out what I'm working on - www.instagram.com/tylerisneat

YOU KNOW,

Apple makes a nice computer. And a nice OS. But their DRM policies are absolutely ass. I do just fine on a mac using Firefox, Quicktime, VLC, and Limewire. iTunes can die. Garageband is nice. >_> You can tell I have mixed feelings about Apple.

Edit: Oh XD didn't realize people were talking about the video MS-DOS linked. That sucks.

Is this a phase, L_E_T?

HAHA yeah i thought you said you would change it.

L___E___T

'fraid so, at least for the moment, but I can easily put a stop to it if it seriously grates Jedi - no Mod Powa jokes either, I promise :D

but at weekends I'm female, is it ok then? ;)

My famiclone is rotting.  >:(

I guess that's what I get for forcing it to glitch for entertainment. Some games don't even boot now.  :-\

Pixels are missing on I, G, U, and G. There's also this weird line that appears under text sometimes.

My bet's on loose cart slot pins, especially after the "glitching for entertainment" part. It's extremely unlikely that the PRG RAM developed stuck bits, but it's a clone so you never know.

MS-DOS4

I'll clean the pin connector... Sounds like a good plan.
