Some are saying a new 8-bit Rockman will be released for...the Wii and Xbox. Sounds pretty cool. Someone will have to port it for the Famicom!

I was thinking about it. Really amazing, imagine a Rockman 9 Famicom cartridge! Too good to be true :D

Take a look on the official trailer

I sense a disturbance in the force.
Thousands of retro gamers fainting...  ;D

Good news indeed.
But I could swear this topic has come up on the boards a few days/weeks ago... ???

Kuvio

Wow, I am so glad to see the retro appreciation from Capcom!

JC

Anyone think there's any chance we'll get official Famicom cart releases, albeit limited, or repros out of this?

manuel

Official? Certainly not.  :'(

But I'm sure there will be some Chinese pirates who try to put this on carts.

Kuvio

I agree with manuel. Although Capcom is creating a new "old school" game, they are still a business and I am sure they wouldn't profit by putting it on cart. It seems to me they would make more money using online services. Which begs the question, will it come out for XBLA or WiiWare in the states? If possibly both, that would be great.

Joppers

I imagine a cart release would depend on whether they've programmed it in 6502!

I'd be very surprised as it's destined for the Wii, PS3, and 360!

UglyJoe

Yeah, it seems unlikely that they would code up an actual Famicom/NES game rather than just another game that's styled as an NES game.  I doubt we'll know for sure until the game is released.

I think the only way it will be a reproducable nes game is if capcom was working on mm7 for the nes and it just never got released...  It's really hard to picture this being a real nes game and being programmed today, but at the same time, they have really hit the nes style dead on. Hmmm...

I'm excited for Megaman 9, a title I've been hoping to see for literally years, but I personally think that this is an extremely lazy move on Capcom's part. From the trailer, its clear that they are merely reusing the same two decade plus old game engine and even some spirtes and enemies from at least Rockman 5.

I was hoping for a Megaman 9, but with beautiful Metal Slug-esc arcade graphics or something that at least looked as good as the Megaman The Power Battle spitres. While I'm a huge fan of it, 8-bit is dead and should remain dead. If you want to do an 8-bit style game, then that's another story. Instead, you need to create the old gameplay and whatnot with modern standards of graphics and sound. This is a step backwards in my opinion, espically since Megaman 9 has been confirmed by Capcom that it will NOT be the missing link between the classic series and the X series.

Really Capcom, then what the heck is the point?

JC

I disagree that 8-bit is dead, and I just don't say that because I like it. If 8-bit was the beginning of modern gaming, what's the end? The end would be life-like graphics, a fantasy reality of sorts. So, by the time everything's been refined, you're gonna have a sliding scale of sorts, with Pong at one end and life-like at the other end. Developers will continue to create games along this sliding scale. These types of throw-backs will be common, imo. They'll be suited to the current systems, but they'll do all those things that 8-bit does best. I think we'll see a lot more of this.

Well said JC, I agree wholeheartedly. I believe any game can be good regardless of graphics, as long as you are having fun with it. Sure, aesthetic appeal is one thing, but 8-bit has a certain nuance to it I feel. It shines with nostalgia, yet this new MM is entirely new. I like that approach.

nostalgia

That's one of the words I was thinking about. This new Rockman is likely more about nostalgia than about what I said. But once the 8-bitters get dead, there won't be much profit in nostalgia.

manuel

I like that the game exactly looks like it was on a NES/Famicom.
