Just got my Gimmick! the other day and I thought to myself "Damn! Why couldn't all Famicom games come in these sexy cases?" So I started wondering what games DID come in them.

I only know of the ones I have, those being Gimmick!, Batman and Captain Saver...

manuel

I know of several Baseball games, Mirai Shinwa Jarvas and Don Doko Don 2.

Family Computer 1983 - 1994 has pictures of all the game boxes.  We could use that to figure out which games did or didn't have cases.  I would guess only certain companies did it, and maybe they only did it for a certain period of time.

I have that book...  :D ... somewhere...  :-[

Namco, Taito, and Koei seem to be the main ones to release hard cases.  These are the first ones that I can see that use them for each respective company:

Dragon Slayer IV is first NAMCOT 1987
Bakushou! Jinseigekijou! Taito 1989
Nobunaga no Yabou Zenkokuban Koei 1988

There are more, but I have to go get ready for work.

Gjegs, you could do what I did and replace those Namcot cases with UMCs - you can find more info here: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=2425.0

My cousin who recently got into seriously collecting video games bought the first Megami Tensei and I was awed by the sight of the black plastic case. I needed to find more of these! So I get the info somewhere that Namco is the only one that had them made (apparently others had them made too...). Below a list of all the Namco ones (that I could find) and here's a link to pictures of all of them:

http://odbeari.1g.fi/kuvat/pelit/Famicom%20hard%20box/Namco/

I'm not sure what's the case with some of these as with Galaga there's a normal box AND the hard box :/ , at least the auction site said that it was a "resale version". I'll go through the Taito and Koei games next to see which ones had the hard box.

Been a while since I continued this. Here's a list of all the Koei ones. I was pleasently surprised that all of them have plastic cases. I also went back to the previous list and now only Taito Basketball is missing confirmation. If  any other companies have used these cases let me know.

And soon you'll have 2 more.  :D

jpx72

Yes, thanks for the helping hand Manuel! I'm collecting the MMC5 carts and those would be the last two out of KOEI ones.
Those KOEI cases are really nice, japanese style - opening from the other side than the rest of the world is probably used to, the only flaw is in the lower right corner where the plastic is cut-pulled inside to hold the manual so the paper insert is folding a bit over there.

tappybot

These games are the ancient precursors to games like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Dynasty Warriors.  Actually, I think one of those pictured is a Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

While I'd be dreadfully bored by such games, I've picked up a few for 50yen at GEO, and I must say, I'm quite impressed by the size of the instruction booklets.. Some of them even come with a cloth like map.

And the case is nice.

jpx72

Of course it's Romance of the Three Kingdoms, most of the KOEI games are built upon stories from chinese or japanese historic novels.  The four greatest chinese novels were the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, Water Margin and Dream of the Red Chamber. There's also Bandit Kings of Ancient China (from the Water Margin novel) and from japan there's the  Nobunaga's Ambition ( about the ancient unification of Japan regions).

senseiman

I hate to voice a contrary opinion, but those black plastic cases are my least favorite Famicom game case.  I truly can't stand them.

The cardboard boxes just seem way nicer to me, especially the small ones that the earlier Namco games (Skykid, Burger Time, etc) came in.  When I see those I think "I WANT....must have....can't resist urge to purchase....too cool....".

When I see the later black plastic cases I think more "What are these?  Small Mega Drive boxes?  No thanks."

I only have one of the black boxes, for my copy of Akira.  It just messes up the whole look of my small CIB collection.  Nice row of really retro-looking cardboard.....and then Akira.

To each his own though!  :)

Oh, and Tappybot:  50 yen games at GEO!  High five!  ;D
