Collection goals?

What are your goals for your collection?

I started out buying pretty much anything I came across, but I recently sold off most of my pirate collection, except for my unlicensed originals and FDS ports. So, now I'm pretty much focused on getting every licensed game and every unlicensed original -- with a few hacks thrown in out of intrigue. I haven't decided if I'll buy pirates of NES-exclusive games ported to Famicom or if I'll stick with owning the NES versions; of course, some NES games were never ported to Famicom -- and what to do about games like Bubble Bath Babes, which is basically a licensed hack of Soap Panic. :-\

PatMan33

Well... I can't afford to have all of the games and I don't have enough space anyway. My goal is to have all of the consoles that Nintendo has made. It seems like a much more reasonable and attainable goal. Also I have a policy that they all have to work. What's the point in collecting something just to keep it behind glass? All my stuff works and I play it regularly (even if it's only for a few minutes).

As far as games go, aside from what I already own, I try to find the best of what that console had to offer. I also look for anything interesting (even if it wasn't all that great) like the Power Glove and stuff like that. It's still a buttload of stuff but not nearly as overwhelming as trying to have everything. And I don't care what anyone says... the Super Scope is a ton of fun. :P

I don't really have a Famicom collection goal yet. Once my NES collection (loose carts) is nearly done -- up to the point where all that's left are those couple of games that are stupid expensive -- I'll probably start collecting loose Famicom carts.  I'm only really interested in official releases, though.

LocalToast

Obviously there are tons of Famicom collectors here, both seasoned and newcomers (such as myself). Now, I've only come to learn a small amount of info on the Famicom, so things such as rarity and other relative values are still somewhat unknown to me.

One thing in particular that I'm interested in from you guys is what you are trying to accomplish with your collection. I guess I have some questions. Feel free to answer any (or all) of them.

  • Do you want CIB, partially complete (box and/or manual), or do you just collect carts?

  • Do you have a particular interest in collecting controllers and other accessories?

  • Are any of you trying to get a massive collection, whether or not you plan on playing all of them?

  • Is language an obstacle in your journey of collecting?

  • What's your opinion of pirate carts? (I think this will have a few different answers)

  • What is/are the item(s) you most want to add to your collection?

  • How much does pricing, availability, or frequency of turning up on auction sites affect your purchases?

  • What purchases do you regret making?

I guess I'm kind of going on little rabbit trails with a few of those questions, but I'd rather have it all in one thread. I'm really interested to hear what other Famicom collectors think about collecting, because obviously there is something for everybody. :)

1. It doesn't matter to me, if there's a game that's popular, or I really like it, and it's somewhat common, I try and get it CIB (Like SMB2j) otherwise, I usually just get it loose.
2. No, I want to get a few other accessories and their games, but it's not a priority for my collection
3.  I don't collect carts to collect them.  If I don't think I'd play it, then I won't get it.
4. Not usually, I try and stay away from RPGs, but if I ever decide to get Mother, I'll just get a nice translation guide.
5. PIRATE CARTS ROCK!!  I only have one in my collection, but I love it.
6. The items I want for my collection the most are a Famicom light gun and the games to go with it.  I'd like to find a gun CIB eventually, but a loose one is good enough for me.
7. It all depends on the game, how much I want it, and the cost.  You sort of have to know the value of a game you're looking for, so you can determine whether it's a good deal or not.  It varies majorly.
8.  So far, I don't regret any of my purchases, as I've only bought from three sellers.  Carl (Famicomshop; ckenda1 on FW), Kris (eBay store; featherplucknfilms on FW), JC (FW)

Hope this helped!

Do you want CIB, partially complete (box and/or manual), or do you just collect carts?

Just cart or disk with art sleeve. Some people like box and manual art, but with the info in Japanese, I find it kinda useless.

Do you have a particular interest in collecting controllers and other accessories?

No, unless it helps me play the game. I love the Arkanoid controllers, for instance. A light gun makes sense.

Are any of you trying to get a massive collection, whether or not you plan on playing all of them?

I buy to play, but want every game...to play, assuming I can navigate the Japanese.

Is language an obstacle in your journey of collecting?

No. Just find translators. When I buy from another country, I buy from people who know the language and English. When I buy from auctions, I go by pics and web translations.

What's your opinion of pirate carts?

Hate pirates, unless they're ports. I love unlicensed games and hacks to some extent. Most hacks are just title screen hacks, which suck. Some are more complex, like Pandamar, etc., which is cool.

What is/are the item(s) you most want to add to your collection?

Any cart or disk I don't have.

How much does pricing, availability, or frequency of turning up on auction sites affect your purchases?

Affects it a lot. I don't have a ton of money, so I buy things a little at a time. When trying to find things you need, you gotta be watching threads and auctions closely. Everything turns up eventually, and usually for reasonable prices. Collecting takes patience when you don't have lots of money.

What purchases do you regret making?

I regret buying CIB, accessories, manuals and NES games early on. Wish I would've just focused on loose carts and disks with sleeves. In the long run it helps not to buy the stuff you don't really need -- the games are the important part.

My first goal was to get every nintendo console (PAL) Now I have them, Im starting to focus on the deeper things... things like the game and watch, famicom, fds, jap pokemon games... I know one thing for sure: I only want Nintendo. Best company ever!!

TanookiSuitSam

My goal one day is to have a complete library of all NES, SNES and Genesis games. I've already made a large dent in the NES library, and a small amount of Genesis games. Still working on SNES though.

My eventual goal is to collect everything from Atari up that I enjoyed along with things that are new to me. I hope to one day get Super 3D Noah's Ark and other wisdom tree games but not all of them. I also hope to get most of the NES accesories in working and good looking condition such as the zapper, laserscope, miracle piano, etc.

One thing I would like to colllect everything of, but I know it'll be impossible, is every issue of Nintendo Power with posters that involve franchises I care about (Mario, Zelda, etc no football poster necessary). Would be interesting to go down memory lane like the nerd did.
Now you're playing with Power

manuel

    * Do you want CIB, partially complete (box and/or manual), or do you just collect carts?
CIB all the way. I love looking at boxes and reading instruction manuals of old games.

    * Do you have a particular interest in collecting controllers and other accessories?
A bit. There are a lot of interesting controllers, but at the moment I don't consider collecting too many.

    * Are any of you trying to get a massive collection, whether or not you plan on playing all of them?
I'd like to have a massive collection and try each game at least once to justify the purchase.

    * Is language an obstacle in your journey of collecting?
Not at all.  ;D

    * What's your opinion of pirate carts? (I think this will have a few different answers)
Nice for people who want them. I personally don't need any. For now.

    * What is/are the item(s) you most want to add to your collection?
Maybe all interesting Rockman and Mario games and turn-based RPGs.

    * How much does pricing, availability, or frequency of turning up on auction sites affect your purchases?
Very much. I try to find everything for CHEAP! Money can buy you anything. The thrill is in the hunt for cheap bargains.

    * What purchases do you regret making?
Nintendo 64 at launch. It cost 399 German Marks. 1 month later the price was lowered to 299. I could have easily bought 1 additional game if I had waited that month.  :-\

Rogles

    * Do you want CIB, partially complete (box and/or manual), or do you just collect carts?
I don't really care, so I usually just buy loose.

    * Do you have a particular interest in collecting controllers and other accessories?
Not much, besides the gun.

  * Are any of you trying to get a massive collection, whether or not you plan on playing all of them?
No, I just want the games I like.

    * Is language an obstacle in your journey of collecting?
No, as most games that are in japanese for famicom are only in kana.

    * What's your opinion of pirate carts? (I think this will have a few different answers)
I don't own any myself, but I think they can be very interesting, and multicarts are a great way to get multiple games you want all at once.

    * What is/are the item(s) you most want to add to your collection?
A Disk System.

    * How much does pricing, availability, or frequency of turning up on auction sites affect your purchases?
If it's common, I'll look for it for cheap. If it's rare, or there's only one I can find, I might go for a higher priced game.

    * What purchases do you regret making?
That Zelda no Densetsu cart for like 30 bucks... >_>

Interesting topic.

I have 3 Japanese consoles that I am collecting for:

- Famicom (I'm up to a little over 100 carts mostly loose)

- Super Famicom (about 40 carts)

- Japanese N64 (20 carts)

I basically just collect whatever games I think look fun to play.  If I ever go for a complete "set" I would go for the Famicom games.  The carts just look way cooler than the SF or N64 ones, which are all gray and boring to look at.

Do you want CIB, partially complete (box and/or manual), or do you just collect carts?

I collect what comes. Doesn't matter if it's cib or cb or whatever. I'm more interested in the game anyways.

Do you have a particular interest in collecting controllers and other accessories?

Some accessories look interesting but none in particular. If I do bump into them in lets say the thrift store for a dollar then I'll pick on up, otherwise nah.

Are any of you trying to get a massive collection, whether or not you plan on playing all of them?

Well when it comes to collecting something it's bound to become massive unless you only collect one thing like all the Zelda games or games only released in 1991. I do try to play all of them but I have pretty short time so I never get to get deep into them specially the RPGs.

Is language an obstacle in your journey of collecting?

No it's not I'll learn the language if it'll help me find a gem.

What's your opinion of pirate carts?

I have various opinions on pirate carts. I do not like those 1000000 in 1 carts which are very useless but I do love the more unique ones and love the weird artwork the carts have.

What is/are the item(s) you most want to add to your collection?

None in particular, I do have a list of games I want but I don't hurry or focus on one game until I find it. If I find it then I'll find it, if not then there is always tomorrow.

How much does pricing, availability, or frequency of turning up on auction sites affect your purchases?

It does affect my purchases since i have a ton of bills to pay and very little money to do so. That's why I turned into selling games I have doubles of and buying what I really want. I tend to look for the best deals and are very patient in doing so.

What purchases do you regret making?

I regret buying those common nes games for 5 bucks a piece....man what a waste of money!

   * Do you want CIB, partially complete (box and/or manual), or do you just collect carts?
I try for CIB depending on the game, otherwise I'm happy with loose

    * Do you have a particular interest in collecting controllers and other accessories?
I actually got myself into it looking for the zapper and seeing the AVGN NES accessories video, so now I'll collect only the ones I'll use

  * Are any of you trying to get a massive collection, whether or not you plan on playing all of them?
Only the games I like, would play, or is considered classic. For example, I typically would not play Contra or Double Dragon or Punch Out. However, they are revered as NES classics so I get them and I play them when I have the time to experience them

    * Is language an obstacle in your journey of collecting?
Not really, I only collect japanese games that I can play without knowing the language like SMB

    * What's your opinion of pirate carts? (I think this will have a few different answers)
I have 3 brands of pirate carts (just a recent purchase): I have Road Runner from Tengen, Quattro Sports on Camerica (funny switch), and Bible Adventures from Color Dreams/Wisdom Tree. They're playable

    * What is/are the item(s) you most want to add to your collection?
I have a longy list... Disk Systems and games for it that I would like, more NES accessories except the speed board, rob, and rolling rocker

    * How much does pricing, availability, or frequency of turning up on auction sites affect your purchases?
Not much, I get what I can from video game stores and amazon

    * What purchases do you regret making?
I got a game genie that didn't work for 5 bucks... which is good but it didn't work
Now you're playing with Power

My overall collection goal now is to just get the games I'll actually play. I just sold (well, I'm still selling) a bunch of things I'll probably never touch, and I'd rather see them go to other people that will enjoy them. Plus I have lots of bills :D

Regarding the Famicom - I still want to get a Twin Famicom one of these days, then a few games that were never released in America, or that are altered in some way.

- Do you want CIB, partially complete (box and/or manual), or do you just collect carts?

Any is fine with me. The carts don't have to be in perfect condition either, just as long as they work!

- Do you have a particular interest in collecting controllers and other accessories?

Not really.

- Are any of you trying to get a massive collection, whether or not you plan on playing all of them?

Just the games I want to play now.

- Is language an obstacle in your journey of collecting?

Nope. I even own some Japanese heavy imports.

- What's your opinion of pirate carts? (I think this will have a few different answers)

I find them very intriguing. I always wonder why pirates use whatever label art they do. (Airbrushing out Mario on labels? What's that all about?!)

- What is/are the item(s) you most want to add to your collection?

Twin Famicom, Kid Dracula, and Holy Diver.

- How much does pricing, availability, or frequency of turning up on auction sites affect your purchases?

A lot, I always try to find the best deal.

- What purchases do you regret making?

None I can think off-hand.
