Hey all.  I'm working on getting the information we have on the forum about fighting game pirates:

http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=533.0

processed and put into the FW game list.  I'm not really into fighting games (or pirate carts either) so I'm hoping to get some help here in sorting this list out.

My main problem is figuring out which of these games are original pirates and which are simply hacks of those originals.

For clarity's sake, let me say that "original" is being used to say that the game is original for the Famicom and not necessarily an original intellectual property.  For example, the Street Fighter II: The World Warrior pirate is considered an original pirate.  A "hack" is a case where only the title screen or character select layout or whatever was changed but the game is largely the same as some pirate original.  Games that use the same engine aren't necessarily hacks of each other.  I don't have a clearly defined notion of when a hack would be different enough to be considered an original, so games that fall into this middle region will be open to debate.

If you know of any FC fighting games that are not in this list, please post info about them (if you feel like it) in the thread linked above.  This will help keep this thread organized while making sure those new games are documented so that they can be added later.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated ;D

The list as follows will show original pirates in bold, followed by any hacks of that original pirate below it in italics (not all will have hacks).  These are the originals and hacks that I have some confidence are correctly categorized based on the above thread and other forum posts.  If you object to any of the categorizations, please say so.

I'll try to look at this more, but on a quick look at it, we're missing Dream Fighter, which is an original by Caltron Industries published by Asder Soft in 1992. Dragon Fighter looks like an original from the screens I've seen.

mrdomino

couple of mistakes I noticed - Dragon Ball Z 5 and King of Fighters 97 are both original, not hacks. (KoF 98 is a hack of 97 though).

as for the uncategorised stuff: Samurai Spirits (the other version), General's Son, Fighting Hero III, Samurai Spirits 2, World Heroes 2 are definitely originals. Super Shinobi isn't really a fighting game.

Fighter V, Street Blaster V Turbo, Street Blaster II Pro, Street Blaster VII Pro, Super Blaster VII Turbo, Street Fighter VI 12 Peoples, Street Fighter V Turbo 60 and Street Fighter II Pro are all derived from the same source, but I'm not exactly sure what the original version is. (probably SF2 Pro?)

I'm also fairly sure Super Fighter III is an original - Street Fighter III and Street Fighter III Mari Turbo are definitely hacks of it, but I suppose Super Fighter III might itself be a hack of something else

JC

Are your sure Samurai Spirits 2 is original? It reminds me a lot of Street Fighter '97 Zero 2. Maybe one is a hack of the other?

mrdomino

They're definitely based on the same engine, but I don't think they're close enough for either one to qualify as a hack.

Samurai Spirits (different from the original SS listed above)

SS3 is by Waixing and SS is by Sachen.

The Sachen version is the one that's already listed, its actually just Street Heroes with a new title screen. The other version is an original by Rex Soft, and I think SS3 is a hack of that. (but it's not by Waixing - they did release a Samurai Spirits game, but its an RPG)

Street Fighter case:
Street Fighter II is the original. Street Fighter III is an update to Street Fighter II (not hack). I think SF3Mari is an update of it but I'm not sure.

I'm fairly sure Super Fighter III came before Street Fighter III though.

mrdomino

I still think Super Fighter III came before Street Fighter III, and someone just ripped and modified the title screen from Yoko's SF2 to give it the more recognisable Street Fighter III name - the "Push Start to Play" and difficulty selection text looks to me like it was designed to be displayed in the Super Fighter III palette. in the Street Fighter III version the colours look weird.

Strider_Hiryu

I have this piece of crap

Looks like a original pirate one, not a HACK. But it uses the same engine as street fighter 3

I was waiting for the conversation to simmer down so that I could process it all and come up with a new list.  I guess I can do that tonight.

---

I updated the list to reflect the changes mentioned here.  I put the posters' names next to the games to indicate that their posts prompted the change.  If I misinterpreted one of your posts, please let me know.  Items in red seem to be debatable and any insight for these would be valuable.  Items in the second and third list that are not striked remain unknown.

Masterdisk: can you clarify what you said about Tekken 2 and Tekken 3?  Is one a hack of the other?

you forgot this:

Mortal Kombat II: Midway
Mortal Kombat II: Turbo
Mortal Kombat III: Midway
Mortal Kombat III: Turbo

Mortal Kombat II Turbo is the original, then there's Turbo III.

So MK II: Midway and MK II: Turbo are both originals and III: Midway and III: Turbo are hacks?

And you pasted 2 times "Super Fighter III / Street Fighter III (unclear lineage) mrdomino/Masterdisk".

I did that because one of the two games is an original and the other is a hack of that original.  We haven't come to a consensus as to which came first.

Please add:
Final Fight 3 (original)

Title screen hack of FF3: Garoudensetsu Special

Is this Final Fight 3?

UglyJoe

That's a beat-em-up, though, not a fighting game.

JC

Good catch with Power Rangers -- they're not quite one-on-one fighters.

FamiRawks

Mortal Kombat III: Extra 60 is a hack of Super Game's Mortal Kombat III which is rather common on their multicarts:

shoggoth80

I have a version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighter... Famicom pirate cart. It's a fighter, does it qualify for your cart list?
