I rememeber sometime back I was bumbling around the FDS side of eBay and there were tons of Nippon disks up for sale. And weren't those SMB G&W things in the Disk-Kun cases given out as prizes for a F1 race or something? That's what I heard...

JC

Golf US Gold Disk = Golf US tournament
Golf Japan Gold Disk = Golf Japan tournament
Super Mario Game & Watch = F-1 Grand Prix tournament -- and raffle
Stationary Set = 3d Hot Rally tournament -- and raffle

Aha! So some people on eBay DO know what they're talking about.

If you don't mind me asking, what is a "stationary set"?

JC

The stationary set is really stupid, actually. I don't get why it was ever made -- the gaming ones (gold cart, gold disks and Game & Watch) are much more exciting.

That is so cool in a "I feel bad for the person who got that as a consolation prize" way.

Yeah...too bad this thing was First Prize and not the consolation prize! Damn Nintendo -- what were they thinking!

Doc

WHAT?! I feel bad for the poor sap...

JC

I don't think I've mentioned this here yet about the stationary set. It was given as the main prize in the 3D Hot Rally tournament. It was given to 10,000 people. The first 6,000 of them were given to people who acheived a high score on one of three tracks in 3D Hot Rally (FDS). The other 4,000 were given away through a raffle. That's what one of the 3D Hot Rally promotion posters says.

What do you mean? Nintendo actually produced and distributed 10,000 of the Game & Watch prizes and another 10,000 of the stationary sets. So there's a combined 20,000 of those two prizes out there. Both of the prizes were given away as a promotion for FDS games. First F-1 Grand Prix and then 3D Hot Rally.

I don't have a number on those gold disks yet. It could be as many as 10,000 of each disk, but I'm not at all sure of that. Remember that the first two tournaments Nintendo held were not promotional, but were to test out the linking of Japan's Famicoms. I figure it's possible that Nintendo gave out only a few of the gold disks and later realized that they could produce a higher number of the Game & Watch and stationary sets as a promotion to garner more attention for F-1 Grand Prix and 3D Hot Rally...and of course, make a huge profit.

Hey, manuel. If you get a chance, I'd be so, so, so happy if you could translate these docs for me. I haven't a clue and I want to include translations in the Holy Grails shrine I'm building.

Just the gist of the part about the stationary set:

My Holy Grail was a square button famicom. Now that I've got it, collecting has been a lot more fun. Cause when I don't win something I'm dying to own, I take solice in the fact that I've yet to see a complete square button fami on ebay, and I have one in my closet! Its hard these days, especially with so many people on ebay with seemingly indispensible amounts of cash. Has anyone seen the amount of stuff that "camaro" dude bought off of featherplukin....jesus christ it was approaching like 800 bucks worth of merch!

The square button Famicoms are neat. I've only seen one on eBay and featherpluck was selling it. :)

I'm a sucker for good deals, so when it comes to Holy Grails and whatever, I'll only buy if I think I'm getting a steal. And I think that's an interesting concept...that everyone kind of has their own "Holy Grail" of Famicom collecting, that one thing you really, really want. Heck, what do I really, really want? Hmm...I think my personal holy grails would be the 16-bit down to 8-bit pirates. They fascinate me so much and so far I only have two of, gosh, however many are out there. I've counted something like 10-15.

Those are some real swank booklets and papers...
