Best single player SHMUP?

I am quite partial to the Famicom game "Argus", it was my first SHMUP to play on Famicom so I got quite fond of it.

To me, Recca' is too hard to be called .the best', and 'Parodius', while fun, is a bit slow-paced and perhaps a bit too cute for that title.

For 1-Player games, 'Halleywars' by Taito (FDS: TFD-HAL) ' is my pick: it.s fast-paced, challenging, has plenty of powwr-ups, a neat twist (protecting the Earth, as its destruction will end the game as well as running out of lives) and nice graphics. Most people just haven't heard of it.

I am personally fond of Gradius, Parodius, and Recca as shooters. Recca IS hard. But out of those, I like goofy, so Parodius.

I haven't played Recca yet, so Gradius II.

i hate schmups for the most part, but I love me some Recca.

Goofy definitely wins. Parodius is awesome. The only shooter I like more is Darius Gaiden, but that's not Famicom.

if this was a 'best FPS' for any system thread my vote would go to doom...damn that game is fun...
