Hey guys, y-bot on digitpress is selling a whole bunch of famicom disk drives and games.  He has decent prices for a US based seller.

I did pick up the broken Sharp Twin.  Which I am going to fix (no surprise).  As well as 44 pirate and non-readable disks. Which you know I will rewrite.

I shouldn't have asked him how many he had and just offered to buy them.  You can easily make your money back by rewriting the SMB2 disk and putting that thing on EBay :)  I thought the Twin was a bit overpriced at $50 for a broken one, although the drive works.  Sounds like a solder connection may be bad connecting the drive to the famiboard since it's not getting the disk inserted signal.

I think the Twin will be easy to diagnose.  There is a switch on the drive for the "Disk inserted signal".  I have to trace that through the motherboard and see where there is a short or broken connection.  Otherwise, I start pulling out the logic analyzer.

I'll rewrite the official Nintendo disks to their fully glory and sell them on Ebay.

The real treat will be trying to see if I can read the Pirate disks with the Game Doctor.

where'd you get that game doc? and also the switch is the prong protruding on the left side of the drive underneath the card cover. its left if you are viewing it from the front.

Yea, if any of those disks are cart games trained for doctors, I'd love to get dumps of them.

Kite, I'll have an extra famicom doctor soon that I'll probably put up for sale/trade on here.  Should also get another MGD1 as well for anyone interested in writing disks.

kite200

whats an MGD1? also, you should tell us how you have your writing set up, well, for lack of a better term set up.

Also, that doctor sounds cool, put it on here when you get it maybe ill want it if I got the money :)

An MGD1 is a Multi Game Doctor 1, a copier made by Bung ages ago that loaded PC-E, MD and SFC games off Famicom Disks.  It can also be used, with the proper cable and software, to read/write images to/from FDS disks.

i have a few games that say made for game doctor/converter that boot the best out off all my games on my fds. Are they coded different? I can tell you the tittles if anyone is interested

madman

Yea, I have some labelled "for game doctor" but they boot fine w/out the game doc.  The only ones that need the game docs are the cartridge games hacked to be run off FDS.

chimyfolkbutter

I received the pirate non-working disks from y-bot.  Out of the 43 disks, I think 3 of them didn't work.  All the pirates worked with the game doctor.  Some of the games didn't require the game doctor.

What is an easy way to know?  When the game boots, you see the standard Nintendo Company screen come up during the FDS boot.

The Famicom Twin was as expected.  The cartridge works and the disk works when taken out of the twin.  HOwever, when I place it back into the twin, it constantly boots up even though there is no disk in it.  It looks like the Media Indicator line is stuck high.  I tried the motherboard on a working twin system and it exhibited the same behavior.  This was a quick way to tell me that there were no shorts in the cables.

So, it looks like I am going to have another potential workshop article on fixing a twin famicom motherboard.  This one is serious too,  I am diagnosing with my logic analyzer.  Stay tuned.

Anything good on the pirated disks?
