You should mention how Guerilla War has unlimited continues. Kinda ruins the game really.

Sweet Home should be in the the top 10!

Great work though.

I'm loving this list! I've already found several titles I'm going to have to invest in.

QuoteDuckTales Why should you play it? It's a goddamn Disney game made by Capcom!

Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Love the List!

I remember playing Ninja Gaiden II for the first time after beating Ninja Gaiden I & realizing how epic it was! :o (sure, I played the game many years before at a friend's house, but that was vague).

I instantly fell in love with the first stage music. At that moment I deemed it a worthy sequel...

until the storyline progressed.

Still a great game, though, & not as bad a plot as the third one IMO (although that one starts out strong as well ::)).

I even overanalyzed it all in three reviews. You could probably find them out there on the internetz if you look hard enough. :-\

Hmm.. Gradius 2 can't be reproduced? Is this why i seem to randomly explode on the first level whenever i play the game on the powerpak?

Where people found the information about Contra being called "Gryzor" in Japan? I see this mistake everywhere...

UglyJoe

Yeah, the whole "Gryzor" thing is a pet-peeve of mine.  It was called Contra (Kon-to-ra) in Japan, not Gryzor.  See this thread for more ranting: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=1178.0

I know it has been discussed many times before, but...The word Gryzor is probably of Slavic origin (sounds like it), Polish or Russian, maybe related to the word "to bite" (PL "gryźć" or RU "грызть/gryzti"). My bet is that "gryzor" is of pirate origin, where the (most probably Polish or Russian) pirates didn't wanted to use the official name of the game.

(PS UglyJoe - I had to wiki the "pet-peeve" thing :D ...you sure are using strange words sometimes, like the "sauté" in description of T&R forum)

Gryzor could mean something like "Biter" :yoshi:) or also "Nibbler" (def: a biter who takes dainty repeated bites)

Hmm... There is no physical reason that the PowerPak can't reproduce the VRC4, although there may be flaws in the firmware to support it. You might want to update your mapper files from here.

Be sure to save a backup of your old mapper files, in case you have any problems.

There are also other VRC4 games, although I see zero point to trying to hack 'Gradius II' onto one of them, as it is the most common of the VRC4 titles anyway. While a port to MMC3 isn't impossible per se, it would be very tricky, and there exists at this time nether a MMC3 nor MMC5 DevCart, so the point is moot. You'd be better-off making a VRC4 CPLD if you really wanted to bootleg it, and that is not an easy task by any means.  :bomb:

P.S. I try to avoid slang of any kind, when possible, although I am tempted at times for the sake of humour; I write here to an international audience, and I try to limit my vernacular to terms that can be found in the OED.

And another reminder of why Juggalo was a dumbass. :P I hope he's not reading this. :(

Fun fact: The artwork for the NES was borrowed from Gryzor: http://www.vgmastersclub.com/console/c64/GRYZORemu.php

We could replace it with 'deep fry' . :-\ That's not technically correct, unless it's submerged. :-\ Sautéing isn't really that correct either. :-\ Roasting would perhaps be the most accurate term.

Another fun(fact?): when me and my brother were younger, we thoght that those guys from Contra are Schwarzeneger and Stalone (we  were calling them Terminator and Rambo :D)

Gradius II can be reproduced, but only by using another VRC4 Famicom game as a donor. Since there were no VRC4 NES games, it can't be done on the NES. As for the Powerpak, the Powerpak is perfectly capable of running mapper 25 for a good while now. If yours won't run it, update your Powerpak mappers. Once done, you'll be able to experience the game in all its glory.

Thanks for reminding me about this. I was pretty sure this was a mistake when I was writing the entry for Conta, but forgot to double check. I'll change it when I get a moment. Does anyone know definitively what "Gyzor" means in English?

I'm sure the resemblance wasn't unintentional. Back in the day before the internet, the boxart for games was particularly important for sales, as often times whats on the cover was all you had to go on in your purchasing decisions. I can still remember a time when it was my birthday or something and my dad would take me to the store and say "pick out a game" and all I would have to go on was the boxarts and *maybe* have read something in Nintendo Power.
