Have anyone ever heard of a store called Tsutaya? I recently discovered it after moving to Japan. I must say, it's a pretty cool store. They have everything from Manga to 3DS to Famicom Disk System games. I was quite surprised to see the prices for the FDS games as compared to the highly priced Wii and 3DS games.

Unfortunately not all Tsutayas have games. Not a single one of the 8 stores in my region has games.

Where exactly in Japan are you? (Probably Tokyo...)

Then you should look around for GEO, VIC21, BookOff, HardOff, BookMarket, 2ndStreet and any stores containing the word 倉庫 etc. etc. There are a lot of treasures to be found!

I guess that's good for me then. All of the Tsutaya stores that I've seen here, in Okinawa, have games. :)

Lum

Wow. That's the kind of price range I'd love.

I live next to a couple Tsutayas, one has some older stuff but no FDS games or anything like that.  I did one time find a loose Gun.Smoke in a Book Off for 100 yen though, works perfect.

You're in Okinawa?
Awesome!  :fire:
I want to go there too one day...

Well, if you ever decide to, let me know and we can meet up. I'll be here for the next four years or so.

Kobe!  Couple nice game stores over in Osaka if I wanna hop the express for twenty minutes, though there is a somewhat-junkier store here in the city that has some so-so condition FDS games and a variety of other weirdness.

4 years? Nice!
So what do you do in Okinawa? Are you on the military base by any chance?

Yes, I'm a government contractor.

The Tsutayas in Fukuoka don't sell any retro games either, which kind of sucks.  Well, at least the few that I've been into didn't have any, seeing this post I'm going to have to do a thorough search of the bigger ones just to make sure!

Around here all the GEO used to have pretty good (though pricey) retro game sections until a few months back when they sold off all their pre-PS2 era stock.  Sad to see them go, but I got some good deals during the sale!

Book Offs are very hit and miss around here.  Most of them don't have any retro games at all and of the few that do they mostly just have a few Super Famicom games that nobody really wants.

And I agree, Okinawa is great.  Been a couple of times.  Kobe is great too, I spent 5 years living in Hyogo prefecture (1 year in Akashi, 4 years in Himeji) and miss the hell out of the place. Good memories.

Those packages for those Super Famicom games are so eloquent. Here in Canada all the local game stores either stack them up in a display case or put them all in these giant ugly ugly security cases. The Japanese once again are superior!

There is only one Tsutaya in my town and it is CD/DVD rental/purchase only.  No games.  But yeah, the GEO has a nice selection of those old Retro ones.  I buy most of my retro games at Famicom Dojo though (yeah, the show name is based off a video game store in my town).  And you're in Fukuoka?  We are practically neighbors.  Kyushu 4 Life!

So where are you, Vinnk?
Kitakyushu? Saga?

I love that part of Japan, too!

senseiman

Yeah, Kyushu is great!  I love living in Fukuoka - its one of those cities that is just the right size.  Big but not too big.

I still have to check out the Tsutayas in town though, haven't got around to it yet:)
