Im in the process of making my own boxes to store my loose carts (I realized I am too cheap to afford original boxed games lol) and as such am also 'trying' to design the box art for it. Since I am only going to use it for personal use and I am in no way making money off it, Is it okay if I copy art from the net and modify it for printing to my box without putting credit to artist or the website?

RainLink

I see no harm in that, I would just remember which artist did what. The only thing I could see bad with it is if you claimed that you yourself did it, which doesn't seem like what your doing. So I think your're okay  :)

Duly noted Rain!  ;)

Errr and I am also in need of ideas or help touching up a box cover Im trying to make. I just dove into GIMP without any prior experience and I am having a hard time editing stuffs lol. This is what I have so far:

https://picasaweb.google.com/103621071075490462624/ReproContraBoxInProgress?authkey=Gv1sRgCNWUqumTtsmCXg

I like how the front cover came out, though it needs some enhancing I think. The back cover seems a bit too blah for me and I am simply not artistic enough to think outside of the box for awesome design options to put there so whatever anyone can come up with Ill be very interested and thankful to see... and oh that goes for the spine too.  ;D I do hope to include the two screenshots somewhere in the back as well as some captions to go with it. I have some boxed games for reference at home but theyre all in Japanese so I dont know what the texts at the back usually mean lol.

P.S. Im pretty sure I saved the full size picture but I dont know why the box cover design is small when uploaded? o.O

What do you guys use for editing? Is Gimp just not user friendly? I am having suuuuch a hard time even looking for the tools to make basic shapes and the text tool I find is also absolutely and horribly limited.  :-X

P

GIMP is a nice free alternative to Photoshop but it is a bit confusing and I prefer Photoshop. I don't get what the idea with a ton of separate windows is all about. I heard there's a variant of GIMP called Gimpshop with a Photoshop like interface though.

First of all, all I can say is WOW! That front cover is really sexy, I like how they both kinda "pop out" at you. As for the back, I like how you were trying to incorporate the font that's used in the game,  but I think you can go with something a bit more..upscaled. Like do you get what I mean? If you look on any back of game packaging you see they always use a generic nice looking font. Like here's 2 examples:

If you look on the back of any NES or Famiom game box, you'll notice they MOST of the time they all use a very similar font, try to match it. A very good place to figure out what font is used in pictures is whatthefont.com, where you can upload any image, albiet  it is a very clear image, and it will give you a list of fonts that is a direct match or others that look similar.

For the spine I would keep it as simplistic as possible, I would just add the logo and maybe a contra enemy to the left or right or even on both sides of the logo.

I mostly use photoshop, but gimp is also pretty good. I think in all honesty it depends on what your most comfortable with- each program have their strength and weaknesses alike.

Good luck Butcherdeliz, hope this helps and we all can't wait to see the finished product! :D

Youre right. Modern styled fonts do look better at the back. Thanks again for the advice guys!! I would surely post the finished product here when Im done. I am also switching to Photoshop in the hopes itll be more noob friendly hahah.  ;D

Can't wait to see the finished product Butcherdeliz, and I'm interested to see how you're faring with photoshop.  :D

I finally finished my set of Famicom Rockman games. It's a shame none of these labels will have much practical use.   :-\

Here's the templates of Rockman 7 and 8:

I've edited my original Rockman 9 and 10 carts, so if anyone for any reason wants those templates feel free to PM me, I don't want to scrounge up any more space in this post.

And with that I'm done making Rockman labels. I promise!  :-[

Made this for a rom translation of "Jesus: Kyoufu no Bio Monster"
check it out here http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1043/

I could not find any good artwork for this so i used a low quality scan.
Don't like the way it turned out but thought someone might like it or could fix it or something LOL.

Argh that is one of the most annoying things when you don't have a high quality piece of art to work with. Regardless, I think it looks really good and I defintely want to give this game a check out.
