Hi, I recently got a famicom, and I am new to japanese games and setting them up, and I was hoping I could get someone's advice.
I hooked up my famicom to my TV via RF cable (no switch) to my TV, but I do not get a picture or sound, sometimes the static changes when I turn the famicom off and on, when tuned to some channels, mainly 30, so I know that the famicom is turning on.
I live in the UK, and have a pal TV. I looked into playing famicom games on a pal TV, and the only answer I can get is about AV modding the famicom.

I really do not want to modify my famicom, and I reguard this as a last resort. I also found something about using a VCR. I have a VCR already hooked up to my TV, and ran the famicom's RF cable into the VCR and ran some AV cables out of the VCR, but I am still not getting a response from the famicom.

Do I just need to add a converter like this one between the VCR and the TV?

Thanks in advance,

The VCR must be a Japanese or USA NTSC model, otherwise it won't work.

Your options are:

  • AV mod your Famicom

  • Get a Japanese or American VCR to do the conversion

  • Replace your Famicom's RF modulator with one taken out from a PAL NES (might not have enough space for this)

Realistically the AV mod option is the easiest one, unless you can import an old VCR from Japan or the USA without much hassle. The tape mechanism doesn't have to be working, just the TV tuner, so a cheap beat up machine that eats tapes would work just fine.

I think replacing the RF modulator will be best. Are there any guides as to go about doing this?

Replacing the RF modulator is probably the hardest way to do this and requires a lot of... modding. You will make less mess with AV mod.
You should be able to make your TV show the RF video, I'm in the PAL region too and it works. Not sure about the sound, your TV must support that.
I suggest trying your Famicom on several TVs, to find out if the RF modulator of your Famicom works. And if not, go to the AV mod.
