Looking to "restart" a famicom collection. Need advice.

Due to certain "events" my famicom collection is effectively kaput (along with all but one SuFamicom game). Not a big loss since I had around 99.999 percent games that were available in English.  But it has made me want to re-energize and restart my collection (Well, that and helping my friend out with that Mario 8 card).

So, I've been trying to figure on what to start with my collection.  Currently these seem the obvious choices:

"honeybee" or famicom to NES converter.  While I do intend to re-get a famicom/famiclone and/or a new Sharp Twin Famicom (I swear I will remove the ears of whoever has mine now  >:(), I'd like one of these both as a holdover and as a more "portable" method of playing famicom games, since most of my circle have NES's.

Famicom
Gundam Gashapon Senki 2+
Gundam Z Hot Scramble
Famicom Wars
Mecha Fight
Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki dayo Zen'in Shugo
Kunio Kun Games in general
Devil World
Quest for Ki

I'd like some of the more unusual pirate games, but I'm waiting to see what I find there.

Currently the pirate games (specifically modified/pirate original) i know I'm interested in are Mario 4, Mario 8, Chrono Trigger, and Rockman (Darkwing Duck).  I've got to admit there are more than a few pirate carts I'm curious about otherwise, but I've either seen less, or they're multi-game carts.  Those  in the list are the ones that really made me go "hmmm..."

I was just curious if there were any other "staple" famicom only or famicom different games I should pick up I failed to think of.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I think there are quite some threads on this forum with some advice on which famicom games are useful? I think I've seen it.

Really?  So far all the one's i've found didn't have real answers, or were rather more specific.

If there were any really good ones on the site I didn't see them, but I'll look again.

...

Well, don't know how I missed this http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=7018.15.  Certainly a good starting point.

Sorry for troubling you all.  I'll try to dig through the archives more...

Maybe I was wrong there was no really good thread.
Here is another: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=5553.msg88115
I can name some other games later maybe. I know a lot of good games. :)

I may be wrong to ask because I enjoy so many famicom games, if only for their cultural charm.

I would recommend you to get every sunsoft, konami and nintendo game, every jajamaru and ninja kun game, every shooter, every action/rpg (including hydlide), every ganbare goemon game. And finally everything with disney characters, based on a movie, or based on an anime character where the carts look awesome.
Maybe you want to get a second opinion, because I think my suggestion includes a couple hundred games. Maybe 200 or so.

Oh, I forgot: Every capcom game too.

I think saying EVERY game is going way to far, what if he cant read Japanese? Wont be able to play RPGs or other games that are text heavy....

as far as pirate games go I suggest Time Diver Avenger, its a port of an unreleased title, its actually fairly common and can be found for a reasonable price (usually $15-25)

what genre do you prefer?

Hmmm..tough question.  I'd have to say my favorite genre is the platformer, but I enjoy a good game in almost any genre.  I'm pretty interested in strategy games for the Famicom due to the low amount/lack of such games in the NES library.  Hence famicom wars and SD gundam being on the list.

..I don't think I could afford every one of those games.

Time Diver avenger?  Hmmm...I'll be sure to add it to the list.

And know, I can't read japanese (yet.  Working on it).  So RPG's and text heavy games would be a "for later" pile.

If you like Z Gundam Hot Scramble, I would also recommend Super Dimension Fortress Macross.  If you can get past the ear-bleedingly bad music, it's pretty challenging and fun! It lacks the "3D" parts, though, and plays more like a sidescrolling shmup than Hot Scramble, which is more platformer-esque.  Plus, transforming mech.  8)   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNGexMkG82Y&feature=related

However, speaking of transforming mechs, avoid Transformers: Mystery of Convoy/Convoy no Nazo like the plague.  Worst.  Game.  Ever.

If you're into shooters, then Tetrastar: The Fighter is well worth tracking down.  Really good graphics, and the soundtrack is entirely classical music.  It's got an interesting story with nifty little cutscenes, but if you can't read Japanese all you can do is gawk at them and go "oooooohh".  I believe I got my cart-only copy for about $20 and it money well spent. :)   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLu_j9zpiDs

Hmmm...Macross does look tempting...

And I admit Tetrastar sounds unusual too...

Macross is one of those games where, unless you're a fan of Macross/giant robots, you'd probably look at and go "meh."  It's super cheap, though, so I think it's worth picking up anyway.  ;D

Tetrastar, on the other hand, is a bit of a rarity...I can't seem to find any copies for sale online.  I'm sure there are some guys on here that'll help you out, though.

...I have the ANIMEEIGO release of Macross,  Trust me, I'm a Giant robot fan.   ;D

I'll keep an eye out for Tetrastar, but it's rarity and cost might push it down a bit in priority.
