Mark of the Wolves is the best you'll come across as far as balance and amazing visual go. If I want a sure fire go to then I'll play Super Street Fighter II Turbo, but my favorite will always be Street Fighter Alpha 2.

Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
International Karate
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (I consider it close enough to 2D)

Well, technically nothing is more balanced than the original Street Fighter. Only 2 characters, and they're both identical in every way play-wise.

The console version of Alpha 3, in my humble opinion, has the greatest roster in a fighting game, ever. My favorite characters, E. Honda, T. Hawk, Blanka, Balrog, and Fei Long were finally brought back for the first time since Super Turbo. :3

Super Street Fighter 4 deserves an honorable mention as well. While I greatly prefer the gameplay and graphics of the older games in the series, the SF4 sub-series introduced El Fuerte and Hakan, two of the most unique characters in a fighting game, who both require much skill to be effective with.

For the record, if I was to name my choice for the worst fighting game ever, I'd have to say Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. That game is an atrocious mockery to the genre in every way, same with UMvC3.
So ends another chapter in the glorious legend of the Ninja... Until next time...

I played SF4 for the first time about two months ago and I have to say that I felt like the play control was a big step back in the series.  I felt like I was fighting in water with the way characters jumped straight up with the slightest forward angle.  The aesthetics, however, were much more tolerable than I thought they would be.  I only played the game for about 45  minutes so it is possible that it would have grown on me in time.  Of course, SF II, Alpha and 3 wowed the hell out of me first time I played them...  It is a shame as I was so looking forward to fighting with Ken and Ryu's sensei.   :'(

Gouken was a huge let down to me. And yeah, most of the complaints about SF4 are how dumbed down the controls and move inputs are. Capcom wanted it to appeal more to the... casuals... >.>

I play SF4 every day and the easy inputs make it harder for me.

Best 2D fighter?  Street Fighter II X in my opinion.

Not sure how Tekken and Rival Schools can be considered 2D...

Best 2D beat 'em up?  Streets of Rage 2!

Indeed, it seems all the longtime fans who started with earlier games, have their performance crippled by the easymode shortcut inputs. Even I, as a Honda player, occasionally will get an accidental Oicho Throw when I go for a Sumo Headbutt. This is rare though, a friend of mine who mains Seth has it the worst, as Seth has so many moves, all with similar inputs.

oh I didn't know beat'em'ups counted.  I also agree with bare knuckle 2 in that case.  And ninja warriors!

FamicomRetroGamer

Dead or Alive 2 or Marvel Vs. Capcom 2...

I love DoA2 to death but my favourite beat em up game is MvC2 on Dreamcast.

Nightstar699

As for beat 'em ups, Captain Commando on SNES would probably be my favorite.

Arcade version is great too!

Aha, Drakon, I figured it would be. Never played the ARC version, I plan too though, as I imagine the sprites would look closer to the Captain's appearance in Marvel Vs. Capcom. :3
