Being a typical straight male I absolutely love an amazing beat 'em up.  I prefer ones that require a bit of strategy and not just button mashing.  Here's the ones I really enjoy from off the top of my head

Bare Knuckle / Streets Of Rage 2

TMNT 2: The Arcade game famicom version (a little easier than the nes version)

Ninja Warriors for the SNES

TMNT 4: Turtles in time snes / arcade.  The arcade version seems to have a rank system that makes the game more difficult if you don't die so I guess the snes version would be a bit superior

TMNT 3: The manhatten project

Batman: Return of the joker nes

Knights of the round arcade (I never tried the snes version)

Captain Commando (arcade)

Let's discuss amazing Beat 'em up games and what we love about them

I don't play too many of them, but of the few I played I especially liked (Super) Street Fighter II Turbo, because of the easy to use special attacks.
I also enjoy Virtua Fighter 2, Tekken and Soul Calibur.

For side-scrolling ones I like the Final Fight series.

I never got into final fight it felt more like a button masher to me.  I also forgot to mention ninja baseball....yay irem!

Well, many beat 'em ups involve button mashing, that's kinda the nature of the genre.  ;D

As for which is my favorite? I'm tempted to say Batman Returns for SNES, I really am... but Captain Commando... hmm... can't forget about Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers for SNES... and Super Double Dragon... and Spartan X... HMMM...
So ends another chapter in the glorious legend of the Ninja... Until next time...

A beat 'em up? ???

I tend to lean towards the arcade versions of these games for various reasons.

Anyway, I like TMNT
TMNT: Turtles in Time
Double Dragon
Although I only played it briefly, Battletoads
& strangely enough, I have an affinity for Double Dragon 3 due to the music & aesthetics, but definitely didn't like the shop system.
& of course, X-Men

Maybe he was thinking of Batman Returns... although, I've never played the NES version of that, so I'm not even sure if it's a beat 'em up.

I always loved Rival Turf as a kid, not sure why. The sequels (peacekeepers or brawl brothers or whatever) didn't get a hold of me in the same way.
