I've heard that the full version of SMW is only found on multicarts. I'd be curious to know if that's true.

i don't think that's true
but i could be wrong

The version which ends after level 4 has more on the cartridge that you can play in either an emulator or with a game genie. I don't know if that version does have the final battle or not. Some of the multi-cart versions are the same game just with the ability to select levels so that you can get beyond the 4th level ending. I don't know if there really is a more complete version or if the normal version has the bowser boss battle in the stuff beyond the 4th level. I have a Super Mario World that's not a multi that's in my pile of projects to work on. Someday, I'll have more to say on the subject! :)

Hmm...that's interesting. I had presumed that the full version meant it would move from level to level, without the level select option, all the way through to a final battle. But, you are likely right. I hope we someday know for sure. I'm gonna keep buying every SMW I see, so I can find a level select version, and, maybe find a version that plays past level 4. I got my information about the "full version" multicart from a good source: http://cah4e3.shedevr.org.ru/index.php.

How can we select levels ? I want to check if my copy has the level select option

JC

If you've got the level select version, it's pretty obvious, because you'll see a screen with a pipe for each level -- you enter whichever you want. But, I'm not familiar with any of the Game Genie codes that would provide access to these levels if you don't have the level select version.

There's a secret screen in this game, it's kinda scary.
Enter a level, pause and press Up, Right, A, Down, Right, B, Up, Left.
Try it!

JC

WTF...what's that supposed to be?

133MHz

I have no idea. I've only seen that thing on Kevin Horton's avatar at nesdev foums, probably because he discovered it.
Maybe it's an easter egg left by the Chinese programmers? I'd love to know more about this, it's really intriguing.

Anyway, it's really weird. It'd be awesome if we could solve this mystery here at FW ;D

How do you know? I've never seen an icon on their goods and it looks a bit messy in on that hidden screen, not quite a cohesive logo.

What's JY Company?
Google only shows me lots of weird and unrelated shit.

JC

JY Company made a bunch of pirates. You can most easily identify them by the "JY-[some number]" ID codes. Some have said they are responsible for many of the unlicensed originals.

Awesome! I'll check my pirate cart collection to see if I have any JY carts :)

There's a smaller version (9 8x8 tiles) of that logo elsewhere in the chr-rom.  I have no idea if/where it's used in the game.

Checked a couple of games on that list to see if the "logo" appears in the rom.  No site of it in the Mickey Mania rom.  However, the full version of the logo (the one used on the hidden screen of SMW) is right at the end of the rom for Power Rangers III.  Maybe it is a logo, of sorts (or, at least, a kind of calling card for the programmers).

edit: Ack, the logo is there in Mickey Mania, but it's smaller.
