Hey guys,

New member here....it's cool to see a site dedicated to the Famicom!

So I have a question for everybody.  Can you guys list the top famicom games?  I want the must owns.  The best of the best.  Either games that were exclusive to Japan, or that are significantly different than the American versions.

Note: I already own/am familiar with:

Gimmick!
Contra
Crysis Force
Akamajou Densetsu
Gradius 2

I'm trying to beef up my collection and need everybody's expert opinions!
I love shmups, puzzle games, run n' gun.  I hate RPGs!

MasterDisk

Super Mario Bros. 2 on Famicom Disk System (known here as Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels or SMB2j). First one that comes to mind.

My personal favourite is Hogan's Alley.
Some must-haves:

- Recca
- Shatterhand JP version (solbrain)
- Power Blade JP version

those are all nice suggestions, this topic is helpful!
on a sidenote, I see Recca as a cart-only eBay BIN for 360$  and double for a boxed version...  :o , things like that makes me wish the Famicom Everdrive gets released soon!

RainLink

-Rockman 3: Dr Wily no Saigo!?
-Recca (This is seriously just a must, I know it's been said already)
-Duck Tales (Yes Duck Tales, Capcom did a wondeful job on this game)
-Punchout!! (Gold cart edition  ;))
-Akumajou Special

This is a list of my all time favorites/Famicom Essentials. Rockman 3 has some of the best music, I always get full of nostalgia when I play that game or hear music from it.

Yo !

Here's a list with a bunch of Famicom games on it, all the ones with 5 stars are really worth hunting down in my opinion...

samurai pizza cats
splatterhouse

Thanks guys, these are really helpful...keep em' coming!  I forgot to mention, I have a pretty decent sized NES collection...about 110 games of what I consider to be the good ones.  So I don't want any famicom titles that are just the same game with a different title screen.  I'm looking for either games with noteworthy differences, or exclusives.

Here's my suggestions for

Famicom games:

Holy Diver - A good Castlevania clone with Dio as the main character

Wai Wai World 2 - The first game requires a bit of Japanese comprehension, the sequel requires none. A very fast-paced action game with lots of variety.

Spartan X 2 / Kung Fu 2 - Japan only sequel to Kung Fu. Graphics are really impressive in this game.

Lickle - This was released on the NES as Little Samson, but as Little Samson is extremely rare and expensive, seek this out instead. Cute platformer with lots of variety.

Layla - I like this game a lot, weird atmosphere similar to Metroid with shmup bonus levels.

Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti - Famicom spoof of the Splatterhouse games.

Akumajou Special: Boku no Dracula-kun / Kid Dracula - Cutesy platformer with a young Alucard from Castlevania as the main character.

SD Hero Soukessen - Great side-scroller with characters like Ultraman, Masked Rider, Gundam and Kikaider. Very similar to Wai Wai World 2.

Getsu Fuuma Den - action / adventure hybrid from Konami, sort of a shinto-feudal Japanese take on Castlevania. Plays like a more refined version of Konami's first Ninja Turtles game on the NES.

Goonies - Not Goonies 2, Konami's first game based on the movie, weirdly didn't get an NES release, but was in arcades in the US. Good puzzle platform game.

Daiku no Gen-San / Hammerin' Harry - Fun (and hard) platform game. Swing a big hammer!

Famicom Disk System:

Nazo Murasame Jo / Mysterious Castle of Murasame - GREAT overhead action game set in feudal Japan with a sci-fi twist, very similar to Zelda.

Ai Senshi Nicol / Love Warrior Nicol - Very cool overhead adventure game in a sci-fi setting, similar to Blaster Master and Startropics.

3D Hot Rally - Very fun official Nintendo racing game with very nice graphics and good music.

Bio-Miracle Bokutte Upa - Sidescrolling action game starring baby Upa! Nothing else like it.

I might be wrong but isn't the Japanese version rare as well?

Rare for a Famicom game, but not as rare as the NES one. I paid $35 for a cart only copy, which is still way cheaper than the $100+ you'll pay for the U.S. version.
