Should I Mod My Super Gameboy Cart?

I've been looking at retro sites lately, and I saw that the Super Gameboy 2 has a GB link plug, so it can link the cart to other Gameboys for Pokemon games. I could also use it with my Gameboy Printer and the GB Camera. Also, if I ever got someone to fix my SNES, I could use it to play 2 player versions of Original GB games like Tetris.

If I got a GB 2, would it be worth it to mod my original Super Gameboy, since the parts could be scrounged from junk Gameboys that are a dime a dozen on eBay? I have the version of Tetris that came with the original Gameboy, and the game doesn't cost much to get another one. Since the Super GB 2 has a link plug on the right, I'd want mine on the left, to make the connection easier. I'm using a Retron 3 for my SNES needs right now, and the Super GB is too loud on it, so I'd need a volume dial on the right side, so I could turn the Gameboy sound down and use my TV volume to make it louder. I'd also want to put in a headphone plug for late night gaming, with a muted TV.

I'm getting the Super Gameboy 2 either way, but I wanted to know if a mod to my Super Gameboy would be cheaper than buying 2 Super GB carts, one at a time. The cheapest I can find for the Super GB 2 carts on eBay is about $40 each, so if I could get someone to mod my Super Gameboy for $40 at the most, including shipping both ways (I'd include a SASE with the junk GB and Super GB cart), I'd be willing to do it. Any takers?

You can get an SGB 2 for much cheaper than $40 if you look around. Another nice perk about the SGB 2 aside from the link port is that it's not overclocked like the original is (that's why the sound on the SGB is at a slightly higher pitch than it normally is). Granted you can do a mod for that as well, but it's just more convenient to grab the SGB 2 instead.

The link port mod is easy. Mine is also on the right side. I only tested it with tennis, I don't used it. An interested mod would be gbc support.

VinylDracula

40 bucks!?

you can get a super gameboy 2 for ten bucks or less normally.

satoshi_matrix

where? I've been looking for one myself.

You made a duplicate thread which I responded to, so here's some copypasta of what I said in that thread.

If you are proficient in soldering and are absolutely sure it is even possible to add in the GB Link cable port to the original design Super GameBoy (I kinda doubt it is, but who knows?) then sure, go for it.

As for the "volume dial", that's an issue with Super Famiclones.  The volume mixture the SGB produces is already correct, adding in any sort of potentiometer there would be completely useless. You need to either be a Famiclone modding expert or just use the original hardware, either an SNES or Super Famicom.

Or, buy a SGB 2, and then get an actual Super Famicom. The volume mix errors that the Retorn3 produce won't go away. you just need to stop using it and replace with the original hardware. There's no skirting around that.

2A03, my Super Gameboy isn't at a higher pitch. It's having different sound problems altogether. You know the way a spear sounds when the volume of a song is too loud for the speaker, like when you turn iTunes up to max on your computer, then turn your computer up? I'm having the same problem. I need someone to fix my Super Gameboy so that doesn't happen when I put it in the SNES slot of my Retron 3. satoshi_matrix, I got my Retron 3 because I don't have the space for a Genesis, NES, or SNES in my room. That, plus it play Mega Drive and SFC carts, plus Famicom carts with the 60 to 72 pin adapter I already have. I have a hard time finding space for my Wii, my Twin Famicom, my Retron 3, and my PS2 in my room as it is! My PS3 in in the living room because that's where the big HDTV is. Before the Big HDTV, it was in my room. That makes 4-5 systems I'll have to find space for if I ever move, and you want me to add MORE systems? Not gonna happen! The mod's easier! Can anyone help me?

satoshi_matrix

The problem is NOT the Super GameBoy. Its the clone system he's using. Lowering the volume level on a Super GameBoy will NOT help.

Would this work better one my Retron 3? http://bit.ly/Y8kaW5 According to the seller, it's under clocked to the exact specs of the original Gameboy. Is this what I need to make my Retron 3 pitch perfect, Gameboy wise? He even sells the audio software that goes with it! Sounds like a good way to start a chip tune career!

The Retron 3 is a piece of NOAC shit, so there's no making it "pitch perfect" or even really decent.

Right now, the Retron 3's the best thing for my retro gaming needs. I've got U.S. SNES & Sega Genesis slots that double as SFC & Sega Mega Drive slots with the flip of a switch in the back. I have an NES slot that has a 60 to 72 pin adapter in it, giving me another place besides my Twin Famicom to put my Famicom carts, and hopefully the FDS Ram cart at a later date. On the same table, right next to it, is my Twin Famicom, which gives me my FDS and Famicom games on an original Japanese system, so I don't lose any sounds that my NES games might be missing. I'll get a 72 to 60 pin adapter for it later. The SNES/SFC slot is currently holding the U.S. Super Gameboy, for my big screen Gameboy needs.

To my right is a bookshelf. On that bookshelf is a purple Gameboy color, silver Gameboy Light & Pocket consoles, an NDS Lite, and a GBASP with a 3 game adapter attached that lets me switch between 3 GBA games. I also have a rechargeable battery pack for the GBC, a GB Printer, and some various Nintendo things lying about. Also on the shelf is a Sega Game Gear and a few games. I'll get the Master System adapter for it later.

I have a PSX, a PS2, and a PS3. The PS3 is in the living room, working as a Blu-Ray player for the big HDTV. I have a Wii, with a few  disks & some NES games downloaded, and a Sega Dreamcast that's a glorified CD player, because I haven't gotten any games for it yet. I have an Atari gathering dust somewhere, and I want to buy an Intellivision & a Vectrex to replace the consoles dad had to scrap due to being broken beyond repair. One day, I'll have a Colecovision, if I can ever find one.

I'm building my retro collection bit by bit, but right now I'm living with my folks, and I only have my room to store my stuff. If dad ever finishes the Basement properly, I'll move all my books down to the room I'll have down there. This room will turn into a guest/gaming room, if I have anything to say about it! If by some small miracle I can afford to move out and find my own place, the living room will be for my modern gaming stuff, and my room will be for the retro stuff.

Umm...what's a 36 y/o still doing living at home, if you don't mind me asking? Not to mention all this emphasis on retrogaming when you should be looking for a job and spending money on something that can earn you money. I couldn't imagine living at home at your age.

I get your point, but some people have genuine reasons why they can't work and I would just say that what may not be obvious over a forum could be very obvious in personal circumstances.
