Shoot, 87? Around the time of Rad Racer's US release. I don't have much of my NES stuff anymore. I remember when my parents bought me Rad Racer, I was wondering how I'd be able to play it without a steering wheel type controller. LOL

I don't think the glasses had any writing on them, nor had a package. They were definitely yellow and in the style of the Japanese ones, however.

So they were not really Tobidase Daisakusen glasses? Or maybe they are rebranded, use the same injection mold or something.

I think they were and NOA had them shipped to the US as replacements, from NCL. Maybe excess stock that they didn't sell and found a use for, kind of thing.

The old gamesniped article that the techcrunch article cites has additional picture.  There is an advertisement for the yellow glasses in an issue of "Nintendo Fun Club", so certainly seems legit.

Edit:

I think the frames may be a little bit different.  I tried to take a picture of my Tobidase Megane in as close an angle as the gamesniped reference photo as I could.  It seems like frames on the US version are a bit flatter somehow, or the temples are curved the same way.
