Just wondering what you guys think because I want to get one that is shaped in the mold of the original famicom but I realize that there have been so many made through the years and would like to hear your feedback, thank you.

Well, this is a matter of opinion depending on what one is looking for in a Famiclone, however, out of the ones that I own, my favourite is the one that resembles this:

Pretty sure my box for that is similar, I don't believe mine says "USA" though... my system is coloured differently than the one on the box, too.

While I'd say the A/V Famicom is the best way to play Famicom games overall, from my personal experience, the Famiclone pictured above was the one that performed the best, and closest to the original hardware. Honorable mention would be the Yobo FC Console/Neofami. I have this one Famiclone which looks so awesome, it resembles a Super Famicom, sadly, I can't get a single controller to work on it, and I've tried tons of them. Oh well.

Oh that looks sweet. I would love to get my hands on one of those.

Yeah it works quite well. From my personal experience, I'd say you should try your best to avoid Famiclones which resemble a PSOne... I've had a couple of them and they were all pretty damn bad. Although I could be wrong, I'm just saying the ones which resemble real Famicoms are generally better in my opinion. Unless you find a shitty Famiclone for just a couple dollars, then I'd say they're worth to try, if anything.

Yea I definitely want one that resembles the family computer model. Any idea where I can look for one?

I've owned over a dozen Famiclones. The best one I've ever come across is without a doubt the TriStar/Super 8 that attaches to a Super NES or Super Famicom.

Check out my detailed review. You can buy one on ebay usually for around $40. It has cartridge slots for both 60 pin Famicom and 72 pin NES games and will play just about anything you throw at it and do it flawlessly too - no weird colors or awful audio.

I'm actively looking for one of those with the AV slot.  Can you hook me up with one?
I've searched ebay and google already but no luck :(

Do they make famicom clones with the av slot, meaning the ones that look like the original model?

As for me, I'm all after our homeland "Pegasus" aka "MT-777DX" :

Exactly, on the other hand however they're most compatible with those really shitty-made (mostly glob-top based) famiclone pirate cartridges.

Luke, what do you mean by "AV slot?

satoshi_matrix

AV slot means composite video.

I wrote a huge guide to Famicom and Famiclone starters a while back, where I contrast the strengths and weaknesses of just about all the major players out there. The best in my opinion is the Super 8 due to its sheer performance, but there are lots of other options too. Check it out.

Basically my famicom AV mod has jailbars and it really pisses me off.
I have been playing a fair amount of Super Famicom lately so figured it'd be best to get one of the TriStar/ Super 8s but I've since changed my mind and will find an AV famicom loose as cheap as possible I think and use NES controllers.  No I won't use NES controllers because I can't be bothered with that mod yet.

I'm sending my AV mod famicom to Tea 4 Two when I've sold some things.
I'll be listing some nice pirates here and a few bits and bobs.  I rounded up everything I didn't use anymore so there'll be a Super Mario multicart available among others very shortly.

I have to agree The Super 8 is better, as well as the Retro Duo with a Famicom Adapter
