The Ninja Warriors (Super Famicom) Well, I finally found the one game I like more than Hoshi No Kirby. I thought this day would never come.

I don't get it, that game seemed to me when I played it so so dull, like Spartan X seriously dumbed down.  What is it you like about it?

You mean The Ninja Warriors Again? That's one of my favourites in the genre! How is it a dumbed down Spartan X? Great graphics, great music, great control and overall very fun fighting. Unlike Spartan X you can block and avoid attacks less randomly, and you can throw opponents for more tactical versatility. It's maybe a bit on the easy side though.

What P said! I absolutely adore Ninja's moveset, not only are the animations great for all his moves, but I've found so many places where different attacks are useful, keeps the gameplay varied and fun. The soundtrack is my 2nd favorite in a game, right after Choujin Sentai Jetman. The graphics were great, I loved the bosses, etc. I just loved everything about it. Although I have yet to beat it without continuing... yesterday I had to continue on the final boss, today I had to continue on the 6th boss... perhaps tonight I'll get it perfect.

Edit: L___E___T, are you sure you aren't thinking of the original Ninja Warriors game, on arcade, PC Engine, and Sega CD?

I got a copy of Bee 52 (NES) in the mail today, and just played it for only the second time today. (I tried it once a couple of years ago, thanks to another collector in town who had a copy.)

As for Ninja Warriors, I've never played it but I just had a look at a playthrough on YouTube. It doesn't look too special to me; I can kind of see LET's complaint that it's basically Spartan X/Kung Fu. You basically walk to the right in a straight line and take down waves of generic dudes with one punch apiece. Or, that's at least what it looks like for most of the first stage and a half. Moreso than not, I think Double Dragon immediately and forever made that form of beat 'em up obsolete. (Also, the defeated generic's single scream got really annoying.)

Spartan X doesn't have nearly as many different ways to fight opponents as Ninja Warriors, nor does it contain as many types of enemies. And with enemy types that you have to use completely different strategies to defeat, it becomes very fun and intense when you fight  then in large groups. Despite being 2-D rather than the standard 3-D for beat 'em ups, the combat in Ninja Warriors is a lot more in-depth than any other game I've played of the genre.

Edit: Oh, and there are a few different screams for various enemy types, this becomes more apparent later in the game.

Nerdynebraskan you didn't watch that Tool Assisted video did you? There's no enemy that goes down in one normal hit that I remember. But yes it's the same kind of slightly monotone beat 'em up as Spartan X (we used to call the genre Walk and Punch as kids), but I like the genre.
The arcade version is much harder and you don't have as many moves and characters, making it more monotone.

Nightstar I don't get what you mean by standard 3D for beat 'em ups? Isn't most beat 'em ups, even for modern consoles, in 2D?

Nightstar699

What I meant is that most beat 'em ups, such as Double Dragon, Final Fight, TMNT, etc. allow you to move up, down, left, right, and diagonal, while Ninja Warriors Again is only left-to-right, yet the depth of combat, and move variety is much greater than that of other games I've played of the genre.

And the regular soldiers do die in one hit, consider them the Goombas of this game. But a lot of the later enemies really know how to put up a fight.

Oh, and I played it again last night... sadly, had to continue on boss 6. I have a feeling this battle is being made much more difficult because I use Ninja, who is unable to jump, so... when they do their quick sliding move, it's basically a free hit for them, I have no way to avoid/beat it... not that I know of. Perhaps I should learn how to use the other characters.

I see, it was a long time ago I played it. I thought you could move in all directions. lol

The ninja is good for throwing since you just need to walk toward an enemy for him to pick it up with one hand, and he throws far. But you might need the kunoichi's speed on some bosses. I could never use Kamaitachi very well so I rarely used him.

Nightstar699

Ah, fair enough. I actually prefer strictly 2-D beat 'em ups, so it'll never be an issue of lining yourself up with a particular enemy or object, you can just focus on the combat.

Yeah I love Ninja's throwing abilities, I'd say his downward throw (the back breaker) is the best move in the game, does massive damage, and there's a couple bosses who you can catch in "throw loops", and it defeats them with ease. You are correct that Kunoichi's speed would come in handy, the sixth boss is the pair of giant cyborgs, and fighting them with my Ninja is just... ugh. If they get on opposite sides of me, then I'm finished because that slide is impossible for Ninja to deal with, if only he could jump like the other characters! My best bet is to  throw them into the corner, and use max-range punches to keep them there, but it's a scary fight nonetheless.

Buzz & Waldog (NES)

This is a fun little platformer; it's a shame it's such an obscure game. I recently picked up a repro of it, and I'd definitely recommend it to fellow platforming junkies (nightstar!).

Adding it to the list! I actually remember seeing screenshots of it a few years ago, I used to browse a site that had pictures of tons of unlicensed games, sadly the site doesn't appear to be up anymore.

Pokemon X (3DS), of course. In the first 48 hours of owning it, I logged 23 hours into the game. Since then, I haven't had much time to play, but now have just over 40.  Currently in the middle of Victory Road!
