I think it has to do with the US being the largest consumer market in the world. American retailers can demand lower prices and foreign companies can sell that low because the volume will be that much higher. Though I don't know how that would make sense in this case, seeing as Japanese video games sell outrageously large numbers in Japan. ???

manuel

They know that most Japanese games will pay whatever price they ask, so there's no need to make things cheaper.  :'(

Japanese consumers are sheep that buy a DVD with 2 episodes of their favorite anime for 8000 Yen.

Just for reference, 80% of Nintendo's sales are made in America. So that's <20% for Japan.

manuel

No wonder at such low prices!
I'd buy a lot more if prices were half of what they're now.  :P

Yup. Was looking into purchasing the Japanese Great Mazinger DVD boxset.....too bad its $500 bucks. Kinnikuman boxset is $900.......and thats new right from the factory, not even out of print title inflation....

fredJ

source for that 80% figure?

I wonder about Nintendo being "Japan's third most valuable listed company" (Wikipedia). So the mega-companies (whatever they are called) are not listed?

Wii sells as much in Europe as in the US. I can't find any recent number but "For the year 2010, sales of the Wii hardware jumped in Japan to 2.38 million from 2.06 million, but sales in the Americas fell drastically from 12.93 million to 9.86 million. In the EU and other nations, sales fell from 10.96 million to 8.30 million. "

Found one article, but I stand corrected. It's 80% overseas, not just America. http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/story/2011-10-27/nintendo-earnings/50954118/1

My conditions were
1) it has to be CIB and
2) it has to cost about as much or less than I'm willing to pay.
I always had my eye on a copy for 800 Yen in a shop near me, but I like to pay less than 800 for used SFC games, so I waited to find it for around or under 500 Yen.  ;D
