I have a converter that allows me to play Famicom Games in my NES, but it doesn't seem to work anymore, so I want to buy a new one. But I don't know really where online to go.

I thought ebay, but after searching Famicom Converter and Famicom Adaptor with no results, I thought where could I turn for help. . .FAMICOM WORLD!!! :P

Well, does anyone know a good reliable place online to buy them, and how much they usually cost?

Cool to see you posting, Sushie!

Yeah, converters can be a little tough to get ahold of. I say only "a little". And I don't know why, but they seem to pop up on eBay about oncee every two weeks. So, you can watch eBay for one, or try this seller: HERE. That's who I got my converter from and it works great in my toaster. You can try this web address: HERE. Or you might want to wait around and see if Michael posts under this thread that he's got some available. You can also try your luck and see if you can find one inside one of those early NES "black box" games, like Gyromite, which sometimes has a converter inside.

And look to pay about $10, plus shipping.

EDIT: This one just popped up too: HERE

Juggalo/Hulkamaniac

I heard that in some of the old NES games the converters are inside them.

That black one is a NES to Famicom converter (nes game to famicom system).  Those other ones are probably going to cost you $25-$35 each after shipping and everything.

I've got some converters that seem to be made by Sachen.  I'd rather sell them with a Sachen fami multi at this point in the game.  For people on this board, that would be $50 including US shipping for a Sachen Fami Multi and a converter.  I will install a NES copy protection chip in the converter so that it will work in every toaster/toploader/clone.  None of the linked converters have copy protection chips and therfore they will not work with all toasters.

Basically I overpaid on the converters and got a really good deal on the Sachen games so rather than charge a high price on the coverters, I think I can give a good deal on both...  Sachen games sell for $40 or $50 each and I've rarely seen the multis for sale (more the less NOS multies in box).  I'll post pictures later if you want.

I would accept paypal or check/money order.  If you pay by paypal, I would appreciate $2 to cover the fees.

Yes, there are converters in some old games, but they're a pain to use in toasters.  I worked with them for a long time before I finally bought out the stock of someone selling these converters.

The one I'm selling is in a shell and has a strap to help you remove it from the toaster:

I also do have some fami pirate multis that I would be willing to do instead of the Sachens.   I'll update this if there really is interest.

Mine came out of my Stack Up ROB cartridge.

One trick to finding out you have a converter: Take the suspected cartridge and another one, one in each hand, dangling on two fingers, if that cartridge feels heavier than the other one, you've hit gold. Problem is it's too short to put in the toaster, so it helps to have a Game Genie on hand.

Or just buy a stackup, since the US NES stackup always has them in it...  :)

Doc

I think a Soccer cartridge of mine might have it, it's very heavy...

Take a look the connector pins.  If they look like this (point in middle):

XXXX  XXXX  XXXX
XXXX  XXXX  XXXX
  XX     XX      XX

You don't.

If they look like this (point on side):

XXXX  XXXX  XXXX
XXXX  XXXX  XXXX

You have a converter.

This litmus test only works for 5 screw games that are on the "could have a converter" list...

Doc

Alright, I've been digging in old boxes so I can see if I can find this cartridge...

michaelthegreat

Not every game fits, the connector part can just pop off which can be a pain sometimes...

BUT, it's the best for simple and easy total conversions!

Does anyone have one of the NES games with a converter inside of which they can take a few pics? I want to do something for the site about it, but I don't have a way of opening up the carts I have that I suspect have converters inside.

I have a Stack-Up & ExciteBike cart that have converters in them.

Well, I'll be putting that article on hold. I had it all typed up and ready to go, but my computer died last night, taking everything with it. :'(
