I have a remembrance of seeing an Official Nintendo adapter on a website many years back. Only to remember yesterday of such an occurrence.

The place I remember seeing such an adapter was ( http://shiggsy.gbadev.org/ ) I went to visit his page for the first time in many years last night to drool over all the cool dev stuff and to look for what I had remembered, only to find his site has just about all information removed from it.

I sent him an email to see what had happened to his site and to see if he can acknowledge such existence.

Have any of you visited this site before? Do any of you know of such an adapter existing? I may try to look for caches of his webpage to get my answer faster.

If you're looking for an official adapter that was released, none exist. The SNES/Super Famicom is in no way backwards compatible with NES/Famicom software. An adapter would have to be either a NOAC or have the same hardware as the NES, and simply use the SNES for power, audio and video. There are a few NOAC adapters made unofficially, but there's no point in owning them. They generally suck.

Definitely aware there were no official on the shelf components you could buy. This seemed like something Nintendo whipped up in-house in limited numbers.

I've been visiting that site before. It's a shame all the info is gone. I don't remember there was such a device though. Only the Wide Boy series.

There's the TriStar/Super 8 famiclone that is played on a Super Famicom. It's not NOAC and it's according to SatoshiMatrix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO5ICApvVNY the best famiclone he has tried. It's obviously not official Nintendo hardware though.

As someone who worked on a Super 8 it most definitely is NOAC-based. It's better than most though as it doesn't have the inaccurate audio problem that plagues most NOACs and is compatible with Castlevania III.

There's a chance I could be confusing it with some other adapter that involved the NES, maybe Gameboy played on NES, but I thought it looked different than this.

Still no word from Shiggsy.

Shows how much I know about famiclones. :-[ I thought all NOAC was basically the same.

Here's the WideBoy http://devkits.handheldmuseum.com/GB_Wideboy.htm by Nintendo R&D. I recall there was a WideBoy II also for Famicom but I can't find it.

I used to go on that site a lot but I don't recall seeing a Super Famicom Wideboy.  He had a lot of GBA stuff I remember.

I would try and ask Chris Covell, I think he's more knowledgable.  Shiggsy just used to collect stuff he got from a contact at NOA, but didn't really know about much of the inner workings.

Since we're (kind of) on the topic, does anyone know if this Super 8 is more documented anywhere? it seems like just what I would want (not talking about the shiggsy dev board).

I guess what I am looking for is to see how compatible it is with famicom and nes carts. if there's any titles that dont work, or if the everdrive n8 would.

Edit: kind of found the answer to my question, waiting for last poster to reply with results ( http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10008 ).

If you want I'm happy to do a quick test later with the Everdrive and a few games with different chipsets?

Well there's a surprise, didn't work with my Everdrive Famicom version.

In a way it worked, because it ran all games I tested, but in the main menu and after that all graphics were seriously garbled.  Surprising, as it works with my Famicom carts, I haven't found any issues there yet.

Very interesting indeed. I wonder what differences are in the super 8's interpretation. Thank You for trying.  :)

Wanted to post a follow up of my findings so far regarding the everdrive n8 and super 8. I asked around on nesdev and one guy said it does work, doesnt mention any graphical glitches or anything of the sort. I also found on the n8 devs forum the same guy posted a youtube video of it working with no issues:

I also have not received an email from Shiggsy, I doubt I will ever hear from him.

I can't tell if he's using a SNES, an SFC or a clone.  I tried multiple games on my original Super Famicom, the Everdrive works fine on it's own but I got the same result every time oddly enough.

I just checked his youtube profile for other videos, in one other video other than the one I linked, he's using a American SNES with Super 8.

I suppose that could make a difference?  I don't have a US SNES to test with my Everdrive and Super 8.
